WLAN Hardware Failure?
Hi, first posting. I bought a h5550 (or h5555, can anyone advise me of the difference????) a couple of months ago and recently tried to use the WLAN. I have tried to connect to the internet recently and was unsuccessful.

Unfortunately when I think I have switched on WLAN the LED does not come on (unlike with Bluetooth). In System > Memory > Running Programs it shows that Wireless Control is on though...

I tried uploading the latest SP from hp.com as it has specific WLAN updates, to no avail. So, I'm thinking this is probably a hardware fault. Can anyone advise me if there is a hardware diagnostics program available to check before I invoke the Warranty?

Here's hoping!

I have exactly the same problem on my 5550. I've also found that the orange light can keep flashing even after I've turned the wifi off. Only a soft reset stops this.

Would be very interested to hear if others have experienced this problem.

The only difference between the 5555 and 5550 is that the 5555 is bought from HP directly, and the 5550 is bought from another retailer. The last number only changes so HP can track how the item was sold.

Biffa,
The thing to try if the WLAN light does not come on or the WLAN does not seem to work, is to pull the battery out for a few seconds, then plug it back in. (Make sure you have a good backup before, just in case it would hard reset)

Problems with the WLAN fixed by pulling the battery seems to be a common problem with the 5xxx series iPAQs. On the 555x, it seems like the ROM 1.10 update fixed that problem. At least it did for me. It is difficult to say for sure, since the problem only happened randomly.

Good luck!

Thanx all. Tried it and it works, cheers. Has anyone got a 'Noddy' guide to WLAN, or can point me towards one as I am pretty clueless presently!

Thanx again

Try the Sticky over at the Wifi forum on this site. It's got links to a lot of helpful utilities, etc. Here's also a link to IkeHiker's Wifi Guide over on AximSite, it might be helpful to you. These aren't specific to the 5XXX series WLAN, but should give you a better general idea about wifi. These resources sure have helped me, hope they're helpful to you, too.

(If I haven't said it enough during my visits on this site, iPAQHQ and it's related site AximSite have been very helpful to me!)

I had a problem once with Wlan light not coming on and I had HP on the phone and they said try a soft reset and if that does not work try a hard reset. The soft reset did not work but the hard reset solved the problem and it has never happened again. I think the problem with mine was all the junk I had hanging around from software downloads.

I came here looking to see if I could find an answer to my wifi not even lighting up for me now and I think I have! I have been using my 5450 after upgrading from a 3850 and love the advantages - more power and everything but the built in wifi is the best. After discovering some of the old apps and the improved apps (Pocket Plus 2.0, Abidia wireless, and more channels on AvantGo) and the knowledge that many shopping and coffee shops now offer FREE wireless (gotta love Colorado Springs!!) I would go nuts without my wifi being functional!

Anyway - removing the battery and resetting the unit was all it took - the wireless connection came right on! I am very happy that it was so simple. I hope that this helps someone else to know that the solution can be the same for the 54xx and 55xx!

Hmm... For the first time that I recall since the ROM upgrade, tonight I had to do the "Pull the battery" trick to get the WLAN to come on. It has been several months since the upgrade. I don't know if it is just my machine and maybe what's on it or whether the problem was only 99.9% fixed by the ROM upgrade...
