mymess,
I had a similar problem with an iPAQ 5450 that I bought used a few months ago. My sync cradle was plugged into a USB port on my computer. The solution was to plug the cradle in with the serial cable instead of the USB. I don't know why USB was causing hangups during ROM upgrades, but it worked while using a serial connection.

Julie,
Thanks for taking the time...I am alomost at the point to loose all hope. This thing has beaten me and fustrated me beyond all possibilities.

The screen you asked me to pull up reads:

Product Revision Level : 3.0

ROM Date : 11/15/02

ROM Revision : 1.00.45 ENG

OS Version : Windows CE 3.0

Now this brings up a point. Where it reads ROM Revision 1.00.45 ENG does that mean it is the engish version ?

If so why does it say other wise when trying to update ?

I tried to place the pic here of what the screen said about the conflicting language.

That wasn't very good...was it ? I do not know why the red turned out like that. Those red bars is where it says what the languages are.

On that same that had the ROM info I posted above there is a system tab and when I click it it also reads English for language. What gives ? Is the link on the Hewlett Packard site wrong ?

Well, it looks to me like somehow the identification information in the pocket pc is screwed up. The information it should show in the screen you posted should match the information you posted:

Product Revision Level : 3.0
ROM Date : 11/15/02
ROM Revision : 1.00.45 ENG
OS Version : Windows CE 3.0

Whenever a user attempts to update their pocket pc with a ROM or Firmware update, one of the 1st things the update application does is check to make sure the pocket pc's ROM and language are compatible with the update. If they are not compatible, the update application stops, posts a message, and exits. That's what is happening to you now. There may be a way to avoid this compatibility check, but I am not familiar with it.

Technically, your pocket pc's language is in English, but there seems to be some inconsistencies somewhere in the pocket pc that confuses and mistates your pocket pc's language to the upgrade's compatibilty checker. Even through you don't want to really change the language of your pocket pc (you just want to fix whatever is causing the confusion) you could try the procedure for changing the language of your Pocket PC that is well documented in the forums here and in RICOUK's "My PDA" page found here (scroll down the page a little and you'll see the procedure):

Julie,

Yeah I found a link to that page of his once before. The problem is .I do not know what the language is that it is picking up. I cannot read the symbols (have no idea what they mean)

Because in his page he says you have to both download the language you have currently and the new one (whatever is desired)

And that is where the roadblock is. IS there any links to a page that gives examples of the each language so maybe I could figure it out by that ?

Thanks Again !!!

However your pocket pc registers the language on it seems to be the problem. There is no such language as the one that is reported in the screenshot you provided.

Since there is no such language as to what mine is displaying. Does that mean that I will not be able to update it then ?

The reason I ask is because in order to do the swap as to the linked page above I need the current version (compatible) and the version I want to put on it. In order to do it.

All I want to do is connect to the wifi. Sure seems like alot of hassle....huh ?

Maybe I will send it down the road and let someone else deal with it...The sad thing is..is that I like it.

If I do get rid of it and go to buy another. What are some brands and models that are reliable and do not run ya around just to update them ? Hewlett packard has really fallen down my list. Is Dell and Palm any good ?

I cannot afford a new one so i would be looking at used ones. Just need a starting pint. Need Wifi internet..do not need phone . I need a fair amount of memory 64mb ?? And Nice display screen...ease of use..etc..

Unless you are a hacker (and I kinda think you're not), I don't think you'll be able to update it as long as it is in the state that it is. If it were me, i'd return it and get my money back from whomever I bought it from.

This is an unsual situation. I think HP makes a pretty stable pocket pc. I own 4 HP IPAQs and have no complaints about any of them.

Good News ...

I gave it a break for a few days and did not even look at it. (time to cool off)

Today I figured I would give it another go ahead. I deleted everything that had anything to do with the Ipaq from my computer. I then downloaded the ActivSync 3.8 from the link you provided.

I then went tho the HP site to try the ROM download again....I was sweating bullets..

What you know it downloaded right away. no problems.

Then I went over to download the WLAN firmware update and it downloaded as well.

HOWEVER, Still cannot connect. When you go to the status page it switches between WLAN Off and initiating

I turned the WLAN ON but still get the same message.

Any ideas ????

Congratulations! I'm glad to hear you were able to get your Pocket PC updated.

What kind of WIFI access point are you attempting to connect to? Is this a home network with some kind of encryption? Have you tried to connect to a free hotspot like what you might find at a coffeehouse or the library?

Yes,
Trying to connect to home wireless system. My laptop connects easily, just not the Ipaq. I am sooooo close now just cannot figure it out. It even shows a signal strength bar now...never did that before. Just will not connect.

I live in a small town. I do not even believe there is any hotspots. I will have to ask around.

This brings up another question. If there is a hotspot. What do I need to do to the Ipaq to connect to it ? And if I ever do get the thing to connect to the home wireless is there a way to flip over to the hotspots ?

I am just learning the whole wireless thing. I got the laptop to connect by myself but I have no idea how to try hotspots with it either.(wish I did)

Does your home network have any kind of encryption on it? Do you have the router set up as "mixed mode?"

If you go to a free hotspot (and you may be surprised where you can find hotspots), you should just turn on WIFI, the pocket pc should find the hotspot and connect (if the hotspot is really free).
