Please help before I throw it away...

Hi everyone...I am new here and hoping someone can help end my struggles. As of right now I have a severe bad taste in my mouth.

I will start at the beginning.

I bought a IPAQ 5455. It is near new and was only used as an address book by previous owner.

I was the first to open the Companion CD etc...

I was so escited about getting one of these I could hardly wait. So when I received it I charged it up and ran the CD in the Computer. And then Disaster struck......

I wanted to connect to my wireless router at home where my laptop runs from... I spent 2 days trying to connect, the closest I came was having it flip between scanning, joining, and Authenticity. I was really getting fustrated at this point...called it every name in the book...lol.

Then I stumble upon the HP site and found they had a problem with this modle not connecting. They had a download there for me to download...YIPPEEE ..right ? Not quite.

They stated that I would need to first download sp25877 in order to be able to download the fix for the WLAN . Things were starting to get real HOT now. Starting to be a wild goose chase.

So I download the sp25877 and try to get it to sync over to my IPAQ. 3 hrs later still cannot get it to sync over. I keep getting various errors and have to reset the Ipaq in between tries.

One error was saying it was the wrong language, another was saying It could not communicate with my Ipaq.

I have no idea why it is saying the language is wrong. The IPAQ is clearly in english or i would not be able to read it. And when I went into the properties of the download it is in English too.

I cannot take any more of this running around and getting nothing done. I just want to connect to the wireless....

I am completely burnt out, exhausted, and ready to smash the thing and throw it away.... If someone can please help me it would be GREATLY appreicated (can't even spell that now..been at this way too long)

Well that is where my journey into the Ipaq world has left me.

Are all of these things this difficult to use ?

First, have you done a hard reset?

This should wipe all the previous owners info and data, programs etc and take your device back to out of the box.
Once you have done that you may have more luck connecting or installing the updates.

I believe the previous owner did before I got it. Because it was completely clean when I got it. How do you do a hard reset ? And I can do it anyhow.

Also I forgot to mention above that when I installed the CD all of my email contacts ended up on the Ipaq through the Active sync 3.5 so I do not belive it is my PC or Ipaq since it loaded.

Also how do you delete the contacts from the Ipaq. I did not know it was going to put all of them on the Ipaq.

Sorry, I don't own an Ipaq so I can give you specifics.

I'm sure someone who does have one will give you some more advice soon.

The owners manual should be able to tell you how to do a hard reset. It is usually something like holding the power button and pressing the reset button.
But that is only a guess.

Edit: Here is a link to the relevant section of the owners manual.

The hard reset will delete the contacts (and all other PIM data on the device).

I found your hard reset fact using Google using
"ipaq+5455+hard+reset" doing this you can resolve
some of your inquiries without waiting others to
answer back.
Just a suggestion.

I decided today to try and download the ROM Update again. Still same thing. It downloads to my computer but when it tries to sync with the Ipaq to put it on there it says:

The ROM image is incompatible with your device. Verify that the ROM Update being used is for your handheld model and language.

I did make sure it was the English (America) version before download to computer. I also made sure it was for my 5455.

So any ideas on how to fix this ?

P.S.

At the bottom of the page it said to click back to select another image. So I did and then it sticks on the half page that says :

Verifying the information on your Ipaq Pocket PC......Please wait

Another question this brings up is, Do you think that this update is for a newer version of the ActiveSync ? Mine is 3.5 and I cannot find anything other than 5.0 on the Microsofrt site.

Would it make a difference if it was change to a later version ?

If I did change to another version, would I still be able to download the fix for the connection ? Or would the newer version take care of that as well ?

Also as I was looking around the HP site they have a online help thing where they take info from your computer to help....has anyone used this ?? Did it help ?

However I do not think the problem is the computer because I have tried this on both my desktop and my laptop and had the same problem both places.

The laptop runs Windows XP SP2 and the Desktop runs Windows XP (regular)

This pocket pc could be running Windows Mobile 2002 or Windows Mobile 2003....What OS is your Pocket PC running? What is the precise ROM version that is running on the Pocket PC? (to find out, tap Start > Settings > System tab > HP Asset Viewer > Version tab)

What OS is on your computer? Vista or XP?

The version of ActiveSync you are using should really not be causing your problem, but you can download ActiveSync 3.8 here:
