Can I use GPS if I don't get data part of phone plan.

If I install 3rd party navigation software like iGuidance, will it work if I only have a basic phone plan? I'm looking for a phone with GPS that is cheaper/month.
In fact, are you allowed to get the cheapest phone plan when you get a chip for a phone like this? I'm new at this.
Thanks

GPS Phones that already have maps loaded onto them (e.g., maps from iGuidance) should not require a data plan to use GPS. Those that do not have the maps loaded onto them require a data plan to automatically load the maps of wherever you are at that time. I think Blackberries act like this.

You can use the GPS without it using a data plan. I have two navigation programs on mine, one for the roads and driving and one for hiking with topo maps. It works great although the screen is small.

I use my phone for emergencies only, I have an Airvoice Wireless GSM prepaid plan, cheapest I could find. It uses ATT's network so coverage is great.

This is of couse unless you have Verizon. Their GpS's are lock so that you can only use their VZ Navigator but I have mine my Touch unlocked.

if you have internal/external gps on your device, whether it be phone or pda, you do not neeed to use data .. the gps reciever will directly lock onto satelites in sky.

if you use Agps then you will use data as it use phone network to locate your position

You are correct. In order to use Google Maps & Live Search you have to have a data plan. With Verizon though, their GPS's are all locked. Your only option is to use their VZ Navigator software. This is unless you are able to unlock it.

You people do know that this forum is for the HP iPAQ 910, an unlocked phone. Some of the responses are mentioning other phones.

The 910 has built in GPS, or you can use your services gps or data plan.
