Oh man thats so weak of HP, they are going backwards with these devices..
Whats up with the weak processors they are putting in these new devices.

That's probably the one thing that I have noticed about this device. It's a great device from the reviews that I read. It would be much better with a stronger processor.

Remember, only benchmarking can be the guide here. You know what they say, its not the MHZ, its how you you use them. But I can not see 168mhz out lasting a 624mhz no matter how large the bus is or how they use it.

Waiting on benchmarks.

The reason for the slower processor speeds is battery life. If you look at the battery life stats indicated in the reviews you will see that the 6300 has significantly longer battery life. For a phone, which people expect to at least get through the day if not more, that is an important criteria.

Unfortunately, trade-offs have to be made in design.

have you looked at the asus mypal? it claims to have pretty good battery. If I'm paying $600 at least they can put the 312mhz xscale. btw for the 168 mhz 6 hours isnt all that impressive, at least 8 would be ideal

There's no comparable Asus product though - the iPaq is a PPC phone. But for comparison, the MyPal A716 lasted 3.7 hours and the h6315 8.35 hours according to CNet's looping video test.

Yes.. big shame it is. I had high expectations for this device.. I downloaded the specsheet ... read it, got my hopes up real high... then i saw "168mhz" then hung my head in disappointment. Anyway, I think the 63xx has a slow CPU because HP wanted it to be more of a "phone" than a PDA. Afterall, this is the first we've seen after HP's failure of integrating GSM into the h5450 series. I remember the salesman at the pda shop telling me "well, they've been pdas that have great pda functions, but hopeless phone capabilities - and vice versa. You just cannot have both!" The only pda i've seen since that is worthy of being a balanced pda is O2's XDAII but I haven't been out searching other brands about other devices, so don't be quoting me there!

I believe that this device was never designed for savy, longtime PPC power users. I think this device is more geared for the first time PPC users who has no desire to use all of the multimedia functions or all of the other tech things that we do on our devices. It should be a very decent device for those who look more for PIM functionality than anything else.

Let us also not forget that the downside of the CPU means better power efficiency and longer battery life on the device. Would need to see specs on that however.

My only issue is the pricing. It seems to me that this device should either be cheaper or it should include a wireless function.

I think this should have been a sub 200$ device, preferably around 150-175 to undercut the Tungsten E and Zire 72...roughly equivilant to the Zire 31 (maybe a little higher due to the larger screen).

This could be a nice little device for beginners or limited-users except for two problems:

1) Price - As we have all said...WAY to high for the functionality

2) Size - While I prefer a larger form factor than the 19XX/41xx form beloved by most people here, for this level of device they should have gone MUCH smaller. In fact, I would have made it half to 2/3 as large so that it could easily fit in a purse of a front pocket.

Even if they had to go with a smaller screen this should have been the kind of device in terms of size and price that you could toss in your 10 year old's schoolbag so they would have all their essential phone numbers, a map of the walk home and maybe a couple pictures and a game or two.

HP missed a major chance here, and they will likely pay for it.

When I saw 168 MHz I almost started laughing. My X30 runs at 624 MHz. Maybe it's like the Samsung Processor in the 1940 Model that runs at 266 MHz, because that outdoes the PXA 255 at 400 MHz

Don't forget the processor is "dual-core" . However I'm not sure what this means performance-wise. Perhaps someone could dig up some benchmarks. Definitely not a step backwards as others have suggested, probably a big step forward.

There is some benchmarks available in the rz1715 review on this site. The review can be found here.
