Played with 6315 at CompUSA
Ok, so I was playing with a 6315 at CompUSA today. I was only able to use the PDA portion of it and I walked away a little unimpressed. I had an SD card with me full of WMA's and some .wmv's that I keep on it. The video was very choppy compared to the performance on my 2215. I know that the processor is slower than the 2215 and it probably was made that way to reduce power consumption, but I love using my iPAQ as a multimedia device. I would have preferred a faster processor in there myself.

The other thing I didn't like is the phone speaker quality. I knew there was no SIM card in it, but I dialed my home number anyways, just to get the automated message. I could barely hear it, granted I was in the store, but it should be a little louder. Otherwise, you are just forced to use a handsfree set, which for me, is not always readily available.

Overall, it's a great idea, but it's a little too slow for my tastes and the speaker volume could be better.

I saw a mock up at Fry's and think it is way to big to hold that thing up to my ear.

Rainman,
The phone speaker works great, but you have to get used to positiong the speaker over your ear. After the first four calls, becomes natural. Because it wide, it all about position.

Love my 6315

I agree... the volume of regular calls are good... The speaker phone sucks though. (Unless you are in a quiet place)

That's good to hear. Again, my opinion was based on just listening to an automated message. Unfortunately , it still doesn't solve the slow processor problem. How do you guys feel about it's processing speed?

Processor speed...

For me speed hasn't been an issue, but then again, I don't use it as a MM device. My work has me out of the office 80% of the time driving all over SoCal. With this device, I can easily get my work done by accessing my e-mail over GPRS/Wi-Fi and using it as a phone and PDA. For these 3 applications, it works flawlessly.

My only problem has really been battery life. The first day I had it, I ran the battery down by mid-afternoon. I'm going to need additional accessories to deal w/ the battery problem, but I expected this and am fine with it.

Hope this helps.

That's awesome. I would love to have a single PDA/Cellular solution, but I can't with the 6315 or the iMate/XDA II because I don't have T-Mobile. I used to, but since they don't have coverage in Vermont where my in-laws live, I had to switch to Verizon .

I have since discovered that they now at least have coverage in the area's of Vermont where the in-laws are!!! I still have 1 1/2 years left on my Verizon contract. D'oh!

Ok, so I had a much better chance to use the 6316 at T-Mobile. I walked in and asked if they had a 6315 that I could demo. They brought one out and let me play with one for 30 minutes uninterrupted. I still think the processor is too slow, but again, I know it's to save battery life. It's just too bad that my old iPAQ 3765 handled video better that this 3 years newer iPAQ.

I had a GPRS connection and was able to browse a few websites and use MSN Messenger to talk to my buddy. Websites weren't fast like on wi-fi, but they were definitely usable and bearable. The phone quality was pretty decent. Again, the speaker isn't too bad. It was kind of awkard to hold in my opinion but I think if I had one, I could learn to deal with it.

I would definitely miss the consumer IR like on my 2215 since I actually do use my iPAQ as my theater remote. In the end, I did like it more than my initial use of the device, but I think the slow processor would just annoy me.

What does "consumer IR" mean. The 6315 has IRDA.

Consumer IR means that it has the same power output as the remote controls they make for TV's, DVD Players, etc. The IR on the 6315, 4100 series, and 1900 series are not strong enough to use at distance. In order to use those iPAQ's as remote controls, you would have to sit about 2 feet away to get it to work.
