Costs
Even if one were to pay the full MSRP for the retail-boxed full version of XP Pro at $299 that's still only about $6 a month over the four-year liefespan you mentioned. Businesses like to consider Total Cost of Ownership. That's where bugs and security problems pile dollar after dollar onto the initial purchase price. I have XP bluescreen on me every so often. I often have to restart it because of creeping instability. I've run other OSs on older hardware for many months without a hiccup and only restarting for a major upgrade.

However, I shouldn't complain. If it weren't for these problems I would have to find a different career.

On topic (at least as far as the 6315): I can't get ActiveStink to complete the sync process any more. It gets stuck "Looking for changes". I'll be off on another search on the forum, on Google and Experts Exchange (nothing on MS's KB).

The average person replaces/upgrades their OS every 4 years. That's a little more than a dollar per month for the term of use. I really do think that windows provides you with $1 a month value.

Well, i'm glad the bluetooth is working for you Bone, sounds just the way i'd like it, but for me it just doesn't do it. Bigest beaf, is that if the pda goes into stand by for any lenght of time (30min plus) the bluetooth conection gets all f'd up. I understand that this isn't the case for you, but can any one else confirm that there unit is or isn't able to do this - so that i can figure out if its just my unit, or whatever - thanks

As for microsoft bs, like i've already said, I've been dealing with crashes and bluescreans my whole life, and now i get to deal with it on my pda, great! give me my linux or even dos, ah the good old days of dos, now that was trouble free - and as for profits don't even

get me started, Bill G, the founder & chief software architect for MS is worth how much? 47 billion give or take a billion!!!
Do you guys/gals have an idea on how many zeros are behind that figure? so lets not talk about how much they make on each new bug infested os itteration. - but as we know, most of the public is ok with it, infact most of the public thinks it just part of how it has to be - wow what a snow job . (ps this is just my cynical side coming out - i'm really quite a happy person. )

Catspaw,

I agree with you. I know Bone has gotten his BT working, but I'm now working on my 3rd headset.

And it won't work in my car!

Not ready for prime time!

Ok, i've been thinking about what Bone said for a bit now, and i'm puzzled. Bone you say that your phone bluetooth works fine when your phone goes into sandby, and when it wakesup you can still answer incoming calls with the headset - correct?

Reason i'm asking is cause i've done some tests, and my bluetooth definatly STOPS working when my phone goes into standby, and when it wakes up it takes about 7 seconds for the bluetooth to completely reinitlize. About 5 seconds for the bluetooth to come back on, and about 3 seconds to resolve conection. Does your phone do this? or does it do it any faster? or does it do something different?- because at those rates, its impossible for me to from standby, to answer an incoming call with the headset, cause by the time 7 secons has rolled on by, i've missed the call. Would really like to here the specifics on how it works for you - thanks

Aditionaly, it doesn't always fully resolve the connection... but i'll leave that issue aside for now.

ps - damn echo problem is killing me

Second, a comment on blue tooth implementation on this phone - one word CRAP - you need to be able to use bluetooth headsets with this phone because really, its to large to put to your ear for extended conversations. - but bluetooth cuts out when the phone goes into standby, and when your phone wakesup when you get a call, it takes around 7 seconds for the bluetooth conection to reastablish, at wich point you've missed the call if you try to answer it from the headset... useless - many other bluetooth problems associated with this product, but i wont bore you all with them... other then to say that i'm really, really unimpressed with this unit, and will probably switch back to my other pda, and phone... what a waist of cash..

you could always sell your 6315 and give the i-mate a chance. i love it! 1/2 the size. no antenna, and bluetooth works great. only draw back is no wi-fi

OK, here is what I can tell you, once my iPAQ goes into sleep/stanby mode it takes less than two rings two awaken the device restablish the connection and send it to my earpiece, or I just reach for the earpiece after noticing the first ring/vibration and flip it open and I am connected. I have yet to have it fail.

I know you probably have done this but let me just ask anyways without you thinking I am belittling you. Have you gone into BT Manager, held down on you BT Earpiece icon with your stylus and selected "Set as preferred hands-free" Keep in mind when doing this the device and the iPAQ can not have a connection between each other at the time of doing this. If you have not tried this, I hope this fixes your issue. I personally know two other people with this model and they do not have issues with theirs either.

Hope this helps.

Has anyone experiencing the problem tried this and had it work sucessfully?

Although I don't have any major issues with my 6300 I would like to try the linux port for iPAQs. Some OpenSource guys and even HP is working on that right now. Check out http://www.handhelds.org .There is a linux distribution called 'familiar' that has been done for the ARM-powered iPAQs. There's no version for the 6300 yet (cause it has a different processor and phone capabilities) but that's only a matter of time. Check out this:

Actually, with all the replies to this thread, I'm surprised nobody has given you the obvious advise: RMA your phone! I ordered a 6315 the day after they became available through HP. My first phone did exactly like yours does; bluetooth would not stay connected, wifi was problematic, and the ear speaker wasn't even working! Needless to say, I was a bit unhappy . The second one was better, but had terrible signal in my house (and the bluetooth was still a bit flaky). At this point, I was about to throw the darned thing in the river, but I figured it'd be a bit cheaper to RMA it one more time. Surprise, surprise, my current 6315 (#3) works flawlessly! Well, ok, maybe not flawlessly, but I've only had to reset it once in the last two weeks.
I think the first run of 6315s had terrible QC issues, hence everyone on the net was complaining about them. I'm not sure if HP has fixed the problems, but I know if you keep returning yours, eventually you'll get a good one. I know it's not an ideal solution... but it IS a solution

BTW, I'm using a Bluetake BT400 G3 without any problems.
