Checking Gmail w/ MSMail POP: inbox cleared @ send/receive
I'm new to the 6315 and couldn't find a good answer to this in the archives. I'm using a wifi connection to check a gmail account using POP3 and it is able to connect just fine and download new mail. however, i have three problems.

1. every time the device connects to check for new mail it deletes whatever is in my inbox, whether it is read or not. at that time it will download new mail like it should, but i just lost what i had in the inbox and i haven't even read it!

i have it set to check every minute because i want to be able to get my messages quickly, but not lose what i haven't seen yet because of #2...

2. my notifications aren't always working. i have it set to vibrate and make noise when new mail arrives, but it only works about 1 out of 5 times.

3. if i go to my inbox, most of the time it just says "Connecting..." and isn't really doing anything. does that mean it is having trouble connecting, or is there a problem with the software?

any help? is my problem with my gmail account? anyone else checking gmail with pop? it would be great because it is a free email account with pop access-how common is that? TIA-Dan

just to add to the weirdness, i'll tell what just happened after i submitted this post:

my unit spontaneously reset (that's cute, isn't it) and then when it came back, it vibrated and alerted me that i had 14 new messages in my inbox. lo and behold, all my test messages were right there.

then it hung on "Disconnecting..." So, i closed the inbox program with PocketNav and then reopened it and when it did a send/receive again ZIP! all messages went away! now on every subsequent send/receive there are no messages in the inbox. did another soft reset and still get the same: no messages.

also, i tried another test message and it receives fine and then disappears at the next send/receive.

well, after a little of my own detective work, i've got yet another reply to my own issue:

i tried another pop account i have and it checked it correctly and downloaded mail fine. also, it did NOT erase all my old mail every time i checked for new mail.

so, it appears the problem is with gmail. i guess they didn't assume people would be checking gmail with ppc's so they made it so that when it is checked by pop, it deletes the message from the server. from what i understand, MSMail on a ppc will delete mail from the inbox when it has been removed from the server, right?

so, i'll take the issue up with gmail from here on out. sorry for the inconvenience to anyone reading all this stuff, but hopefully it will be helpful to someone else having problems with gmail. -Dan

Most other mail apps have the option to leave messages on the server or delete, Pocket Inbox ain't that clever.

WebIS mail might be a better option, I tried using Gmail via IMAP as another option but did not have any luck with that. Good luck with Google, let us know if you have any success as I would like to move away from my Hotmail account via Web access as browsing is too inconvenient and I am too stingy to pay up for MSN Plus and POP access

You can set gmail to leave retrieved messages on the server. Go to your Settings/Forwarding and POP page in Gmail.

I can send mail with WIFI and Gmail, but I cannot receive the mail, even my test messages. If I log onto GMAIL, I can see that the messages were sent from the device, but they never show up in my inbox.

Any suggestions?

I had pop.gmail.com and then reading somewhere else I tried pop.gmail.com:995

I still get an error message.

I've checked the 'use SSL' button, and unchecked it.

Could anyone post their settings that work? I'd be greatly appreciative as I can't understand why it is not working.

Thanks,

Ropaq

I figured it out. I had the settings correct and the issues seemed to be on the goggle side. Though I had already enabled POP, but I did the following and now it's working.

I re-entered all of my settings on the IPAQ for the mail account.
Then I went to Google, and selected the option to forward only new mail to the POP. I sent a test message, and Bingo! It worked!

WOOT!

i've got my settings fine and i can send and receive mail just fine. HOWEVER, i'm still having the problem where it downloads the mail fine, and then the next time it checks for new mail, it wipes the inbox clean of all the mail that just came in the time before. am i the only one that is still having this problem? it seems like everyone else can get theirs to work, but are you guys receiving a message and then checking your mail a few seconds later to see if you recently-received-mail stays put and doesn't get cleared out to purgatory?

please let me know if that is the case or if i might be setting something wrong. i HAVE set the gmail setting to "keep Gmail's copy in the Inbox" AND "enable POP for mail that arrives from now on." i've undone and reset both of those options a few times, but i still get the message downloading and then going bye-bye the next time it does a send-receive.

No, no... sorry, dude. I didn't mean to totally *not* address your issue- I'm suffering from the same problem, myself. The only workaround I can think off is to disable auto-checking of GMail, and then just manually send/receive. Once it finishes, you read what you want to read, delete what you want to delete, and then MOVE the stuff you want to keep to a different folder. Basically, I just make sure there's nothing I want to keep before each send/receive, since I know the Inbox is about to go BYE BYE! On occasion, I'll send/receive, and it'll keep certain messages, or even all of them- but it's really erratic as to how it decides what to keep and not.

Sorry, duder.
