Problem w external GPS + serial cable + com port!
I’m having problems trying to connect an external GPS device to my h6315.

I am trying to get my Garmin eTrex Venture talking to my h6315 so I can navigate with Mapopolis. The problem is that neither Mapopolis (nor Pocket Streets) can find the GPS device when it is connected to my h6315.

I know the GPS device works fine - I use it frequently with my ThinkPad and Microsoft Streets and Trips and it works great.

I bought one of these DB9 serial to iPAQ adapter cables from gomadic – this lets me connect the eTrex to the h6315:
http://www.gomadic.com/hpipseadcawp.html

I just can’t get the applications to see the GPS device at all. Is there some way to assign a specific COM port on the h6315 for the GPS data to come through on?

Here is an example error from PocketStreets (I have a similar problem with Mapopolis...):

I have tried making sure ActiveSync is not running on the iPAQ in case that is goofing with the COM ports somehow. Also I have tried a multitude of combinations of starting the GPS, plugging it in and launching the mapping application etc. Nothing seems to work. Am I missing something really obvious? (The GPS NMEA data is the correct version etc)

Since the problem is the same in Pocket Streets and Mapopolis I assume the issue is not related to the applications but more at a system level (or maybe even the cable – which is brand new).

Has anyone had any success with a config similar to mine? i.e. getting GPS data into the h6315 over a serial cable.

Thanks in advance.

Mike

Hi, Mike!

As far as I know the H63xx does not have a serial port wired to the bottom connector, only USB.

Thanks for the reply PRe - I have read comments on various boards that the H63xx does and does not have a serial com port.

Example thread here: http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/showt...threadid=37759

And the thread it points to (incl serial technical stuff beyond me): http://www.opennetcf.org/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3336

OK so Gomadic now admit their cable won't work with the h6315. It seems the detachable keyboard uses the serial COM port and it won't release it (even if you disable the keyboard driver. Looks like I need a BT GPS device.
This item adds BT functionality to my Garmin eTrex:

You can try to disable the keyboard daemon to have full access to COM1 :

1) Go in Start > Settings > System > iPAQ Keyboard : uncheck 'Enable Keyboard' box.

2) Then using File Explorer go in My Device\Windows\StartUp and remove 'iPAQKBDaemon" (you will be able to recopy it later from Windows folder if you need to use the keyboard again).

3) Do a soft-reset

Don't waste your time as I did. The crippled COM1 works only with the keyboard, not with "normal" serial devices. This subject was discussed in many boards, lots of good ideas have been presented ("...I had no time to check it out but it should work...") but nobody got this really working. So buy a Bluetooth gps and be lucky!
