Help Me Please?!? iPaq Programs Screwed!
NOTE: I did not do anything differently. I hadn't installed or altered the iPaq or any programs on the iPaq in anyway. My iPaq is in BRAND NEW condition and only 3 weeks old! Not a scratch or scuff on it!

My 6315 just decided not to open programs like Windows Media and iPaq Backup! I went to watch a Family Guy Episode that had played with no issue before on my iPaq as I lay down to rest and Windows Media just hung and hung and hung and hung and then froze. I couldn't even get it to open or respond so I soft rest and tried again with the same disturbing results. After soft resetting and trying again to open Windows Media at least half a dozen times, I gave up and did a FULL HARD RESET! From there I proceeded to try and backup from the day prior's Backup file but iPaq Backup wouldn't respond!! It just hangs and freezes the system. FOUR TIMES I soft reset and tried opening iPaq Backup to no avail. I then tried to use File Explorer to navigate to the recent backup file and clicked on it. iPaq Backup opened up and just HUNG AGAIN! Freezing my system. I tried this 3 more time and stil the same results.

So I did a full ROM re-write and reinstalled the 1.10.08 ROM. On a brand new, CLEAN system, NOTHING INSTALLED BUT FACTORY ROM SH*T I STILL CAN'T OPEN WINDOWS MEDIA! I STILL CAN'T OPEN IPAQ BACKUP AND I STILL CAN'T USE ANY OF MY BACKUP FILES!!! The iPaq just hangs and completely freezes!

Can anyone help me? I don't know what to do. I'm at my wit's end! I haven't done ANYTHING to my iPaq (and because it's Labor Day, I hadn't needed to and spent the majority of the day with my Family so the 6315 wasn't even used until late today! It was left sitting nicely on the cradle for the majority of the day!)

Can anyone offer help, ideas, or advice? Thank you in advance.

Well, since no one chimmed in I had to figure it out the hard way, but I'm posting to HELP OTHER PEOPLE if they should have the same or similar issue.

I've been able to accurately pinpoint the culprit: the iPaq 6315 doesn't play well with MY SD CARD! I have a SanDisk (*gasp*) 1GB Blue SD card. I've had the card for a little over 7 months and it has worked FLAWLESSLY with my other devices including my two Dell Axims, but it seem as though the iPaq 6315 DOES NOT LIKE THIS CARD!! It has lost data. It had "corrupted" the info on the card and sometimes it completely refuses to even recognize it. I have reformatted it about 3 times. After doing so, the iPaq plays well with it... for a time!

Luckily I have another Sandisk SD card (256 MB) but this one is almost TWO YEARS OLD so you'd think that the 256 MB card would have the problems, right? Wrongo. The 256 works perfectly fine each and every time without a hiccup or worry. Odd right? But the 256 is too small for everyday use, so I need the 1 GB working.

What I found was the problem with the iPaq Backup and Windows Media freezing was even though both of those programs are pre-installed and native to the ROM, I had them both set up to draw and write to/from the SD card!! And since the iPaq was giving attitude to the 1 GB SD card, those two programs froze!

BINGO!

Saved all my info from my 1 giger to my iPod (the iPod serves as a portable HDD and works wonders! Thank God for my iPod!!), reformatted the card, then transferred all my info back over. Everything seems to be working fine again. *knocks on wood*

So if anyon else experiences these issues or similar issues with the 6315 remember to test the SD card. Remove the SD card, soft reset and see if those same problem programs are acting up. If not, then you know it was the SD card/iPaq issue. Save your data from the SD card and then reformat it.

Problem with SD card - another thought?

I just finished putting some data (music) on a SanDisk 256MB card. Thought I'd take a shortcut, and simply writethe data to a multi-card read/write device that is USB attached to my PC. (It had the SD card in it)..

Tuns out all the music was corrupted and 6315's Media Player couldn't read it continuously.

When I used Windows Explorer to copy to the ActiveSync-attached 6315's storage card, the transfer was ok. I noticed that this procedure did some conversion in transit...?

One last point to ponder.... I also stored the SD cards in the little holder on the 6315's standard leather case. Then closed the magneticly clasped cover. I wonder if the proximity of the magnetic field from the cover is good for data on an SD card that's stored in those convenient elastic carrying slots?

Magnetic field should not affect SD card, since flash memory card does not use magnetic to store data like floppy disk.

I use card reader to copy mp3/wma to SD all the time (ActiveSync is way too sloooow), never have any problem. Maybe iPAQ does not like SanDisk? (seems I read it from some where.)

My card is a Lexar 1GB SD. And I have used it for years, on different PPCs (this 6315 is my 5th PPC) and digital cameras. Never lost any data.

Oh, when you copy files through ActiveSync, it will check if the file needs to be converted. But it should not convert mp3/wma file.

There is a well-known bug regarding naming of SD disks. Easy solution: put each SD card in a USB card reader and assign a label using Windows Explorer--go under Properties. Some formatting utilities will also allow you to assign a label This will fix many problems with SD disks. (This is a Microsoft problem, not a HP problem.) I had lots of problems with files missing, disk showing full when in fact they were empty, etc. Adding a volume name has cleared these problems up. I use a 1GB Lexar for my GPS, and 1GB SanDisk for my MP3s, etc. Both now work without issue.
