Your access point is normal for Internet access plans.
I have had three different devices with T-Mobile: Original XDA, 6315, and now XDA mini. I have never had any Internet plan, only T-zones.
At first I used T-zones for 2.99 a month, then I upgraded to T-zones for 4.99 (unlimited), and I finally ended up with corporate e-mail (which gives access to t-mobile smtp servers, to make it easy to send mail) for about $10 per month.
My setup:
You should not have an access point at all; everything is defaulted. The device should hook up to GPRS at that point. If you use an access point, then the T-mobile servers expect you to have an internet plan and they shut you down.
Of course T-mobile wants to sell you the $20 internet plan, and it is not a bad price for unlimited GPRS. However, a pure WAP browser should not require an internet plan. But first you have to be able to connect to GPRS by clicking on the GPRS Icon in the menu bar and hitting "connect". If you are not browsing via HTTP, the servers don't care.
I should note that my T-zones were originally hooked up to a standard Motorola phone (I bought my XDA right after that). Perhaps that has something to do with this. However, T-Mobile changed their system settings about a year ago, and I had to fiddle with my settings to get everything working again after that.
I should also note that I am in Los Angeles, and the servers may be configured differently.
