wmv is the standard format.

Windows Movie Maker 2.0 (comes with XP or may be downloaded for free at microsoft.com) offers an option to recode videos especially in pocket format.

Using TCPMP (media player) will give you the ability to watch many more formats (avi mpg wmv etc)
Small footprint and many more features.

Get it here.

It's free and easy to "install". Just copy it onto your ipaq, no installation necessary (to speak of).
They have directions on the site as well....it's really simple (and free!).

Got it and it works now. good looking out. Just a general question...what can I do so that the videos I watch on my iPAQ goes a little bit faster. It looks like the sound goes faster than the pictures.

The movie might have been encoded with wrong settings (too slow).
I normally use a minumim of 24fps and between 500-800kbps bitrate.
I tried lower settings but would get similar issues as you're having.
Raised them higher and problem gone!
Maybe changing your settings will solve your problem as well?

Encoding software
Check out Pocketdivxencoder (free) to encode your movies to suitable format. Really nice little program.
