Why can the MDA do it, but the 6315 can't?
My girlfriend has an MDA and I have the 6315. She is able to have mp3 ringtones, but I can't. I've read on several forums and everyone says to use wav or wma files. That's a wonderful solution, but I don't think its acceptable. How is it that my 6315 can play mp3s but not use them as a ringtone, yet the MDA can?

Is it possible to "flash" my 6315 to an MDA "flash"? I know you can do this kind of think with Motorolas, I did it with my Razr.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Your 6315 is running PPCPE2003, not WM5. Actually, I never tried using an MP3 as a ringtone on my 6315. The main reason was that a WMA or WAV was usually smaller, and the 6315 doesn't have a lot of storage space.

I'll let someone else handle the OS issue, but no, you're not going to be able to install WM5 on your 6315. Some Motorola's probably work because the hardware is so similar. Think putting MAC OSX on a PC.

I'll take the hardware differences as a valid reason. However, I found an app today that lets you select custom ringtones for your contacts and it has a feature for "other calls" so that might do the trick. Worst case, I'll convert my mp3 ringtones into wmas. No big deal.

Thanks for the help!

Normally I have to amplify audio files for ringtones, cause the original files played in h6365/h6315 audio level is very soft.
So during the audio editing I save it to WMA.

I would have thought that it would have been able to.. Now, not knowing much about the device, I'm still going to add my 2 cents.. My Audiovox SMT5600 (RIP) could play MP3 ring tones, although it was never advertised to do so. Nothing in the manual said anything about it. I was running WM2003SE on it, of the smartphone variety. It worked pretty well too.

Not saying it it will work for yours, but it's worth a shot to try it anyway.. I know to get the ringtones to show up I had to put 'em in a specific folder though.. It was under something like Storage\Application Data\Sounds .. I know the Application Data\Sounds is correct though..

Hope that helps, although it may not work..

You're dealing with two completely different operating systems: 6315 = WM2003 & MDA = WM5. You cannot "flash" the 6315 with WM5 firmware/OS. You cannot flash the 6315 with Motorola firmware. You are stuck with WM2003 OS/Firmware. The only flashing you can do it to official ROM firmware or unofficial ROM firmware that have links posted on this site.

I wasn't trying to put the Moto OS on my phone, I mentioned Moto because I know it's possible on those phones and was wondering if possible on the iPaqs.

whats the name of the app and do you have a link for it? Also download wavepad (google wavepad) and you can chop songs down and convert them to 172 kb waves, and add them to rings on ipaq. Sounds just as good as a mp3, i don't know how much more/less space it takes up. 2 gb's sd cards for $50 at tigerdirect.com solves that problem though.
