6510/5 comes with TomTom Navigator 5 TRIAL
had a reply from HP Support (UK)...

"The version is TomTom Navigator 5. The memory card comes complete with street-by-street navigation information on your chosen area. However you can purchase additional maps from Tom Tom for other areas."

You can find info on buying maps here: http://www.tomtom.com/plus/services/mds.php

I've sent another email asking how I specify my "chosen area" when purchasing from a third party, e.g. Dabs.com / Expansys.com

does anyone know if the UK version of the 6310/5 comes with a UK-wide map for tomtom, or if you have to specify a city?

I don't live in a city, but in the middle of the bucks countryside and I guess my nearest city is oxford, but an oxford tomtom map is of little use to me when i'm hopelessly lost down some country lane (not that i ever get lost you understand *cough*)

The software included allows you to download one "city" map.
They actually seem to cover quite a large area.
The "Hertford" map for example extends across to Harlow in Essex, and includes Enfield, Cockfosters, Barnet etc in London,
but Hemel Hempstead, which is in Hertfordshire, actually appers on the Milton Keynes map.

Go to http://www.tomtom.com/plus/services/mds.php
select Continent: Europe
Country/State: Great Britain
and type in a town near you, the name that appears in brackets is the TomTom map.
Some town may exist in more than one map.

Something to note, it's been mentioned on another forum this morning,
that you can't navigate across maps downloaded in this manner.
Which is not good news!
The GPS obviously tracks across them, but you can't follow a route.
I've asked for someone to confirm where they heard / read this.

Alongside that statement, it's expected you will be able to buy a full Europe / UK map,
but at this time they're saying it would be 199.99 Euros,
which personally I think is insane, as you might as well by TomTom Navigator 5 Bluetooth for another iPaq.

I asked TomTom...
Quote:
Rumour says the UK package includes TomTom v4 on the ROM of the IPaq, and that a free upgrade to v5 is available by a special website.
Can you please confirm if this is true ?
Is the upgrade via TomTom.com or HP.com ?
Is the upgrade a ROM update or stored on a memory card ?

An interview with a French HP rep available by Podcast on the net, suggested the version of TomTom for the HW6515 is custom due to it's screen size.
Can you confirm this please ?
Are there any features not available in this version of your software / maps etc ?

On behalf of some forum friends in the USA, they're optimistic TomTom will be bundled with the 6515 there, can you confirm or deny this yet ?
TomTom Support replied...
Quote:
1) Free update to version 5, visit our website (http://www.tomtom.com/support/suppor...Language=1&M=0)

2) The version of TomTom found on the 6515 is a trial version. It includes a voucher allowing for a 30% discount off the pirce of our Maps of Western Europe package (reg. 199 EUR).

Maps of Western Europe: http://www.tomtom.com/products/produ...109&Language=1

3) Cannot confirm or deny the USA bundle at this time.
I'm going to ask another question with regards to buying individual maps, rather than Europe.
Currently the situation is you still need to pay another 129 Euros to really make use of the included TomTom software with the 6500 series.
When you add that on to the price of the 6515 it starts getting very expensive.

My latest question to TomTom...
Quote:
Hi. Thank you for your response to my previous questions.

I understand with the 6515 software you can download one free city map.
On your website it is possible to purchase additional city maps.

It has been mentioned on a forum that it's not possible to navigate across maps purchased and installed in this way.
For example Hertford and London overlap, but would I not be able to navigate from an address in North Hertfordshire to somewhere in Central London if I had both maps on the 6515 ?

I don't (at this time) desire the entire European maps, and would really just like GB/UK.

Even with the discount 129.99 Euros is a lot to add on to the price of the HW6515.
In your previous response you mentioned the software that ships with the HW6515 is only a trial version, but an upgrade to 5.1 is available free via your site.

My question is...
Will you be offering individual European country maps at a lower price?

You have Navigator5, GB map and Bluetooth Receiver coming soon, would be great if you could offer that without the receiver please ?
I'm really excited about getting TomTom and the HW6515 seemed ideal as it has everything in one unit including the GPS receiver.
HP really should make it clearer to people it only includes a trial version of your software with one city map,
that can't be expanded without purchasing the full European package.

their response received today...
Quote:
Regarding the cross-border navigation, there is a simple way to understand this. You can only navigate in the map data you installed, if you are using a map of London for instance, you can not use any address details outside this map. If you have to switch maps, then you can not do navigation between them.

Individual country maps will not be made available for Navigator 5. The only option to get maps beyond the map that come with the unit, will be to purchase one of the map packs (i.e. Maps of Western Europe or Maps of North America).
