Odd Wifi Issue
On an hw6515 with Spectec SDW-820 SDIO wifi card, I am experiencing an odd IP issue. The card no longer associates with formerly connectable access points. The Spectec WLAN Utility shows an IP and mask of of 0.0.0.0 but does indicate the card's MAC. Similar, WiFiFoFum shows the MAC but 'zero' IP and mask, as does vxIPConfig. When I poke into wireless connection settings for the WLAN-11b Adapter, they show the complete and proper static IP, mask and gateway. For some reason, the IP is not shown in any of the monitoring apps. Any ideas? Thanks.

You might try changing the channel on the router. I had a similar problem a while back and finally determined a neighbor had set up a network on the same channel and, even though his was a much weaker signal, it prevented my PPC from connecting properly. If you try this, keep it on 1, 6, or 11 since all other channels overlap these to some degree.

Thanks. I'll give that a go, although I can already see (NetStumbler/WiFiFoFum) that the network traffic on 6 and 11 is denser than on 1 (current channel).... and essentially same signal strength.

AirBoss, does the problem exist if you turn your router off then back on again? I had a similar problem and that would "fix" it when I was unable to connect.

Eventually I gave up on the Spectec card and went to the Socket SD. It has been flawless.

I'll power cycle the gear (router, AP) and advise in the AM. Thanks for the suggestion. [Hasn't been an issue for the various PCMCIA cards in use, but worth a try.]

Nope. No joy after power cycling router and access point. Same-o-same-o.

I poked around in Registry and found two instances of the Spectec driver, which may be an issue, as well as some odd values in TCPIP keys that corrrespond to the "0.0.0.0" I'm seeing. I may have to take the plunge and try some edits.

Edited and hard-coded proper IP, but no joy. Stumped for the moment...

Removed, rebooted and reloaded, no joy. Very odd.

The card clearly transmits/associates, as its MAC is shown on the AP's bridge table.

The card clearly receives because I am seeing growing numbers of CRC receive errors on the WLAN.exe utility.

Just won't adopt the specified IP. Still stumped for the moment....

I'm starting to hear from others who have the same issues with these cards.

I have two of them that act the same ways in two different hw6515s. Both are approximately 90 days old.

I have just asked Spectec what they propose to do about this.

Think it would be wise to tking something is wrong with those cards
especially it you see lots of incoming crc errors on your router.

I've got the same problem, as I told AirBoss on another forum. In my case, when the card cannot get an address from the DHCP server (DHCP is served from a Win2K3 server on my network, not the router), it gets an APIPA address (auto-config), in the form of 169.254.x.x. I also get lots of Receive CRC errors. The router is fine because my husband can connect with his work laptop which has built-in WiFi, and he gets an IP address and gets out to the Net without ever authenticating on my domain.

Maybe it's a bad batch of cards from Spectec. I don't know. But I might get a Socket Go Wi-Fi E300 card to try next, and see if I have better luck.

I fixed my Wi-Fi problem. I had to set my wireless router to use no encryption, connect with my iPaq, then re-enable WEP and enter the passkey on my iPaq. I was then able to re-connect with no problem. Yaay! I still don't understand why I had to connect with no encryption before I was able to connect WITH encryption, but whatever - I now have my iPaq working the way I want it to.

Opening up security made no difference in my case.

The two SDW-820 SDIO cards are winging their way to Taiwan.

SPECTEC was very willing to make the swap.

We'll see what results on their return/replacement.
