Yep, it's a known problem.
No, it has nothing to do with the speaker so don't even bother touching that.
The problem occurs when you use the headphones, the headphone jack is crap, it spreads the contacts inside which are supposed to close back up when you remove the headphone plug.
So after using the headphones as little as even once, the contacts spread and that's it - you appear to lose sound.
There are 2 ways to fix it.
1. Replace the headphone socket on the iPaq PCB and don't use the headphones ever again.
2. Remove the headphone socket completely, don't reaplce it, and wire the contacts permanently so you will always have sound but never be able to use headphones again.
Of course you can replace the faulty socket but you will be back in there again to fix it next time you use the headphones.
There is another fix but it requires the wiring in of a "wired socket" that hangs out of the iPaq in a small lead, it will never break like the OEM socket but it might look a bit dicky.
Have fun, either way you have to do surgery, oh, and good luck getting a replacement socket from spare parts without buying the whole PCB even IF they would sell it to you ;)
