6945 Headphone Jack (Replacement???)
After reading the other thread (Original Post Herel), I'm convinced it's my headphone jack, also. The sound ONLY plays through the PPC (6945) when the phone rings (like it would when I've got bluetooth enabled or a headphone plugged in). But, I can't use the handset or the speaker phone function when talking on the phone. Further, the "speaker phone" button won't even switch to show it's on speaker phone.

So, I'm absolutely convinced it's not the amplifier (volume works great when the phone rings) or the software. That leaves almost nothing except the jack, and I really don't know jack!

I went to the HP website & got to their online chat only to be told that my now 14 month old expensive device is no longer covered by any kind of warrantee & it would cost $25 to continue the chat session. But, he was kind enough to tell me that I could call their tech support group (1-800-HP-INVENt) and they'd send a box for me to ship the product back for repair. He also was kind enough to tell me to call their billing dept (1-888-866-3292) to find out the possible charges. The charges, per the billing dept, are just under $150 to fix anything that does not involve replacement of either the motherboard or the display. To replace the motherboard (may have been EITHER mb or display) it will run just under $290. To also replace the display will run (if memory serves me correctly) about $450. The price includes shipping both directions and the shipping box which they will send to me. I called the Tech Support group who said they have to have the SERIAL # (from the Asset Viewer screen) & the Model # (only available after removing the battery and reading it from underneath the battery location). Per the billing guy, the Tech Support group will overnight a box with packing material to me, including a DHL shipping label. I'll pack up the PPC & call DHL for the pickup. HP will take a look at it, usually within 5 business days of receipt, and will call me with a cost to repair. They will then have it fixed & returned (either shipped or in my hands) within 3-5 business days AFTER the repair is paid for (faster if you use a cc & MUCH slower if you're mailing them a check).

Considering that I have no knowledge of what is needed to open up this machine, and I sure don't have the teeny-tiny little torx tool, and especially not the part to replace, it seems like I'm relegated to shipping it back to HP for the repair.

We leave San Antonio tomorrow (Tuesday afternoon) for 3 nights in Galveston & then 2 nights in Baton Rouge before returning home on Sunday, so I'm not going to do anything until we return. The unit works fine with Bluetooth, so I'll just take one of my ear pieces & charger so that I can use it if I need it.

If anyone has ANY suggestions, I'll be very appreciative!

Thanks!
David

Let me rephrase what you are trying to do and tell me if I am wrong. You what to be on the phone and at the same time be able to listen to music from the same device.

Sorry, Frenchy, I just want to be able to use the phone without having to use either a wired-in or bluetooth headset. Currently, the only audio I am able to get out of the device without such a headset is hearing the phone ring. Once that happens, I'm not able to talk on the phone at all without either type of headset. And, I'm not able to hear any music under any circumstances unless I have one of those two types of headset. Also, I'm not able to hear any of the verbal instructions from the GPS program. Each one of these have to be able to work with nothing else running. Currently, they only work when a headset (either wired-in or bluetooth) is in use.

However, WITH the wired-in stereo headset, I can use the GPS while having music playing, and still be able to answer the phone when I'm riding the motorcycle, all without me touching a thing, and the music stops while I'm on the phone & then starts back up after the other party hangs up. That's not what I'm trying to do WITHOUT a headset. I'm merely trying to make the audio that is self-contained within the device to work the way it's supposed to.

Again, the only audio that works within the device is the phone ringing. Other than that, I can't get any audio out of the device under any circumstances. The only audio I can get (other than the phone ringing) is with either a wired-in or bluetooth headset. That's not how it worked for over a year, that's not the proper way for it to work, and I want it back like it worked when it was doing what it was supposed to do. I'm talking about it simply doing one thing at a time and being able to hear it over either the device's loud speaker or normally with the device pressed up to my ear in telephone mode.

I hope that clears up any miscommunication. If you, or anyone, has any suggestions on replacing the earplug jack, I'm all ears!

Thanks,
David

Julie,

Once again, you have proven yourself to be a MORE THAN AWESOME resource for all things HW6945!!! Judging by what I've read on their website, PPCTechs charge about $60 for the repair that would be at least $150 straight from HP. I'll probably also let them do the RAM upgrade (from 64mb to 128mb), since they advertise it (& I didn't even know it could be done!!!).

I just have one question ... Have you ever used them? -> I've read the testimonials, but see exactly what I'd expect to see on someone's website: all 100% positive reviews of the service received. But, if you've used them & gotten the same service, I'd say it's indicative of their habits & not of their website design (to include such positive reviews).

Again, you've pointed me in a direction toward which I'd never have thought to look. Thank you VERY much. I'm looking forward to doing business with them as soon as we return from our trip!

THANKS!!!

I've never had to send any of my pocket pcs out for repair (knock on wood), but I have a few personal friends who have used them and rave about what great service they provide. I have also read only glowing reviews about their services in the various forums that I frequent. If I had a pocket pc that needed repair, without a doubt, I would use them.

I have heard that their turnaround is amazingly fast. If you post a question about their services on this forum, I am sure you will get the validation you desire.

PS: If you decide to go ahead with the memory upgrade, I'll be real interested to hear about it. I've been debating about having it done to my hw6925.

My main memory is down to 7.41 mb free space in the Storage memory (total=50.40mb with used=42.99mb) & 23.79 mb of free space in the Program memory (total=48.20mb with used=24.41mb). I have found that my PPC won't return to the "Today" screen - it won't shut down something like the Telephone interface, or the Programs interface or the Settings interface or maybe the Text Messaging interface. Even going back to the "Today" screen doesn't bring it up. This happens every few days and the only way to get it to clean itself up is to soft boot it. I'm hoping to achieve two things with the memory upgrade - #1: reboot it much less frequently, & #2: have it speed up just a little bit. I've found that it seems to slow down when it's about to quit returning to the "Today" screen, and that's what I want to avoid (not necessarily SPEED UP the PPC, but to avoid the slow-downs).

Definitely, IF I let them do the memory upgrade, I'll come back & post the results in a new thread on this forum. I'm leaning VERY heavily toward letting them do it, but want to get their response to the questions I emailed them, and will definitely be waiting until we return from our family trip to Galveston & Baton Rouge (can't miss their St. Pat's party & parade on Saturday!).

If I remember correctly, you're a bit further east than that. Otherwise, if we were close, I'd make it a point for us to try to give you a "Proper Thanks" for all the help you've given me over these past 14 months since I got this thing. We bought a second one for my wife this past September, & she's really been thrilled with how it works (tho it has the same reboot requirements as mine, so I may have HER PPC memory upgraded, too, if mine works as I want).

Oh, & I just noticed that the banner at the top of my window is from PPC Techs! I have gotten to where I don't even see the banners on any of the websites I visit, but because I was just at this site (& that may be the reason the banner presented itself to me - there was a long article in today's newspaper about how advertisers are better able to tailor the banners you see to your shopping & surfing habits), it kind of "popped" into my vision. Very interesting.

Thank you!
David
