how do I free up memory

My storage memory shows only 7 MB free. Program memory shows 21.5 mb free. It runs slow and I have to run Memmaid everyday to free up a little bit of space to make it run faster. I can't figure out what is using all that storage memory. I store all pictures and stuff like that on the card. Any Ideas?
Thanks!

Do you surf the internet much? Have you deleted the temporary internet files on the device lately? (open up IE, tap Menu > Tools > Options > Memory tab > Delete Files button)

The mem maid gets rid of all those things and no I don't surf the internet only occasionally. Anyway I did as you suggested and it has the same amount of memory left.

You do not say what PDA you are using or what Operating System, but the amounts of free memory you quote are HUGE!

My Axim X50v running WM 2003 SE currently has 4.15 MB Storage memory free and 7.27 MB program memory free and it runs fine.

It is not lack of memory that is causing you PDA to run slowly.

To find out what is using your storage memory, using a file explorer go to My Device\Program Files and you will see the folders or files listed. You may be able to move some of these to a storage card.

To find out what is using your program memory go to Start\Settings\System\Memory and select "Running Programs". You can shut down any that you are not currently using.

Would you provide information about how you use the IPAQ (I assume since you posted in the IPAQ hw6900 forum)? What applications have you installed to it? What are your most frequently used apps? Do you use the camera (if it includes one)? GPS?

The memory on my hw6925 is fairly consistent with around 5.7 MB of free storage memory (this number fluctuates based on email usage & internet surfing) and around 20 MB of Program memory, so you can see that my setup is somewhat similar to yours, yet I don't have many performance issues.

The problem you describe could be caused by some of the software you have installed on it. Today screen plugins would be the first type of application I would iinvestigate.

I have the ipaq 6945. I use spd pocket plus for the today screen. I put the pictures on the card. I found what was using all the memory and it was all the emails in the deleted file--about 20MB! The Dinar soft memmaid didn't clean that up. I deleted the files and seems to be working normal again.
Thanks

If you are a serious PPC user, you may also want to spend a few dollars and purchase SKTools. Memmaid is a great product, but SKTools has many additional features (both programs have their strengths). I know in the past many users have both programs.

You can download SKToolsLite for free from their site
and get a good number of its features for free.
I use the FreeUpRam util all the time.

I use SKTOOLS too and recommend it to others all the time, but I don't think SKTOOLS would have naturally found the deleted emails either. I especially like the free up memory utility because it really does help to flush out RAM and I can usually avoid multiple soft resets.

Thanks for letting us know what the problem was.

because I use & recommend sk-tools that is far more…….

It contains all cleanup and more
4 example on sk go to tools/call history/compact
Or tools/settings
My favorite is tunup option (you can even set it to clean your device automatically every night &/or backup on tools/settings/automation)

SKTools on PocketGear.com

anyway 4 the orig post WIMR will do the work of finding the main location of his lost memory
and it is free :)

Pocket Mechanic has one function that SK Tools does not have - Relocate.
This moves any program from on location to another (e.g. from Main Memory to an SD Card) and at the same time alters the registry entries and the program shortcuts as well.

How would somebody fit a device with that screen size in their pocket?

Skating on thin ice here! Is that a PDA in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

I'd like to know how you get a screenshot like that
