Memory Leaks hx2750?
Hi Guys,

Three days ago I bought my first iPAQ. It is the hx2750. Although some reviewers on the web kind of dislike the design, I think it is very sexy.

The best thing about the machines is obviously the huge amount of memory. It seems it can never be filled up.

Until yesterday that is, because I ran into some memory troubles.
After installing (quite) some programs in - mainly - the Filestore, I got error messages when I turned on the Bluetooth radio. It said there was not enough driver memory to turn it on. It can only run after a reset. And this happens almost every time I try Bluetooth, except immediately after the reset.

After checking the stats, I got the following:
Free RAM: 91.2 MB (used 32)
Free iPAQ Filestore: 27.6 MB (used 56)
Free CF Card: 894 MB (used 90)

It seems to me that there is more than sufficient memory left, but as this is my first iPAQ, I may be wrong. I really have no clue at all as to what driver memory is supposed to mean.

Can somebody tell me what's wrong? I really need to run Bluetooth for navigation. What can I do about this?

Thx,

Joepie

Hi joepie - welcome to the site

(Those memory sizes make me very jealous )

Have you performed a soft reset and then tried again?

Thanks for the welcome
Rob,

Thanks for the welcome, what a nice site this is. I did do the reset, and it works only temporarily. After a bit of use, the error will happen again, many times a day. Resetting is no real option here.

But, I should have searched the forum first, there seems to be many problems with both the 4700 and also the 2750 concerning the Bluetooth driver memory. Appearently it is not a Free Memory issue.

I haven't found out what the solution is though.

Thx anyways,

Joepie

When you use other programs do you close them? If you do not close any program that you have previously open then it is still open and using your memory. When you do a soft reset it closes all of the programs that were left open.

Fixed: Bluetooth driver memory problem
Hi Woody32,

There are almost no programs running, except for my Today (pocketweather) and some resident programs. With these running, there should be plenty memory. There is but one minimized program (a clock).

But I may have found some kind of a solution. The utility Spacemaker 3.04 is supposed to automatically clean up undefined mess that was made by the OS. The error message does go away, and I can use Bluetooth without a reset.

*** new info ***
It doesn't always work. So it's a not a complete good workaround. We'll have to wait for another solution. I read that HP is supposed to know about the problems. Hopefully they will make a new firmware soon.

Thanks for the responses!

I just ordered one of these and really hope I don't run into problems from the start

I noticed HP has not even a single file for download for this model yet. I really hope with the new year, they get some patches out for this thing.

Have you noticed any other problems with it? I am planning on getting the 3 year next day exchange warranty on this thing.

Don't worry
own6volvos,

I'd buy it just the same, knowing it has the problems I found. It is a wonderfull machine. There are programs that can reset the machine for you, and the problem will be gone (temporarily). Though this is a bit inconvenient, it is just that.

This machine ROCKS, doubt it not.

Joepie

PS. being a former wizkid (too old now) I think it is an OS bug of some sorts. Microsoft/HP should sort this out. But as it is, large companies neglect their customers , it's a megatrend unfortunately.

I wonder if this might be patched with the first ROM update they release.

Any other bugs you have come across I should look out for?

own6volvos,

I don't think HP will come with an update very soon. The 4700 has some similar problems (probably similar rom) for some months now, and it has not yet been patches afaik. It would be nice to be wrong here.

I've only had the 2750 for 5 days. Played it to death , but haven't found other real bugs yet. It is my first pocketpc, so I had some trouble installing it the way I want. The first few days, I had to reset it quite often, and restore a backup.

There is some software that doesn't run as expected. A game or two (not important, just for show) and two battery "saving" utilities (nice to have, not important) that won't run correctly. I tossed them.

Otherwise I found no problems.

Hope you like what you get,

Joepie

Are you using the file store frequently? I am worried that the 128 meg ROM will have readonly problems like what the 4700 and rx3715 were having.

I'm not aware of any FileStore problems. I use it for almost all programs, and it is filled for the greater part.

Can you point me to the problems on the 37xx/47xx series? I will check whether these problems apply.

I got the error once the first time I tried to use the bluetooth phone connection, then I never got it again. I was probably using a few hours with various bluetooth hardware and had no problems.
