Okay, this may not be analagous, but I started having the same problem with my CF slot. Was ready to give up and call HP, but wanted to try "everything" before calling. When I ran the Self test (Start->Settings->Self test) in the middle it inexplicably brought up a screen saying the storage card was just inserted, did I want to view pictures? The storage card was back in file explorer and has worked fine ever since.
Love my Ipaq, but the OS...well, can you say: "beta"?
