Is it possible to have Sounds for alarms and notifications but Silence for everything else? I have an hx 2790.

Yes.
There is an option for this under the settings menu. I can't remember what the icon is, I think it is "sounds and notifications" or something like that.
When you go in there, there are check boxes for the types of events you want sounds to be played for.
