My son just purchased a new ppc and gave me his old one. It is a Ipaq HX2495. I am planning to use it instead of my hp6315 since you cant update much on it. The 2495 runs really slow so do you think that doing a hard reset and then put the Wind Mobile 5.0 upgrade that he gave with it. So will that help it run faster? I want to do it anyways since I just got it so I am hoping
Also what do I have to do on the 2495 to get it to connect to my wireless internet ? I have turned on the wifi but when it gets to the part about having do something with the setting, I am not sure what to put in. I know how to do it with a pc not with a pcc.
Based on what you said, I assume that your iPAQ HX2495 is currently running Win2K3SE (Windows 2003 Second Edition). Personally, upgrading to WM5 (Windows Mobile 5) will make your device even slower. However, the big advantage is that you won't have to worry about data loss when your battery runs out. With WM5, all data are stored in non-volatile memory while it isn't the case with Win2K3SE.
There are tweaks on the Internet that teaches you how to tweak your device to make it run a little bit faster, things like disabling visual animation which often makes your device run much faster, very much like the case for the PC.
As for the Wifi, after turning it on, you'll need to connect to a network just like you'd normally connect to a wireless network with a PC. If you have trouble, please keep asking or consult the User-Guide at the follow link: http://bizsupport.austin.hp.com/bc/d.../c00267893.pdf
Actually, the hx2495 already runs WM5.0. Are you sure that is the model you have? Tap Start > Settings > System tab > HP Asset Viewer icon > System tab > what does it say there next to Model ID?
See these links for information about connecting to the internet:

This is the first chance I had to work with my ppc. I did as you said, Julie and it says under system that it is a hx2495. So does that mean I dont need to run the Windows MobileTM 5.0 Upgrade disk. I wonder why he bought it for. He had me order it when he was in Iraq and send it to him. I wonder if he realized he didnt need it.

My 2495 is a "2495B" ... is it possible that early models of this box did come loaded with WM2003?
At any rate ... I would not describe the machine as "slow" except at first-use of things. For example if you soft-reset it then go to the menu system you'll find that it takes a few seconds for each page to load. However if you go back to those pages they will then load instantly. The machine caches this information in RAM as you use them - so after using the machine for a little while you'll notice a marked increase in speed.
Also ... something I discovered and detailed in another thread: consider updating the plug-in cards if you have any. If you're running an old SD or CF card in there that could affect performance as the system will occasionally perform directory-searches on them. If the cards are performing sub-par that could also affect the machine's responsiveness. Since I replaced my older CF/SD cards this HP runs very fast - and I'm running WM5.
The 2495 (the non-b) versions were earlier releases and do not have the same amount of memory as the 2495b, but both versions were released with WM5.0. Since the 2495 has less memory than the 2495b, it could run somewhat slower than the 2495b.
I have not heard of any 2490s that ran windows mobile 2003se. The earlier version of in this product line (the hx2400) that runs windows mobile 2003se are the hx2410 & hx2415. For the most part, the 2490 and the 2410 are the same except one runs WM5.0 and the other runs windows mobile 2003se.
However, it could be possible that dinkydo's 2495 is running a very early version of WM5.0 (perhaps a non-production version). If that is the case, dinkydo could probably find a ROM update on HP's support & driver's page to get the ROM up to the latest version.
Dinkydo: What version of ROM is running on your device? (To find out, tap start > system tab > About icon > Version tab)

I did a hard reset, wow , its alot faster than before. But anything you can tell me to make it run faster or improve it. I have a 6315 that I bought several programs for, that I am going to try to put on it , like Pocket Music Bundle. Also bought 2 programs from pdatopsoft that somehow I cant get installed on it, but I will put that in another section.
Under version here's what it says Microsoft Win Mobile Version 5.0
OS 5.1.1702 (Build 14366.1.0.1 ) Processor ARM920T PXA27x
Memory56.62 MB Expansion slot: Not in use
For some reason, I cant get the storage cards to show up, and I havent boughted a expansion card, I guess, that goes in the back. My son kept his.
Glad to hear you got it working well and got the storage card to work. Be sure to stick with regular ole SD cards since the SDHC cards are not compatible with the hx2495.
Some software that runs on windows mobile 2003 devices are not compatible with WM5.0. You might check the software developer's website to see if they have a WM5.0 version of the software.

Would it be a problem if you describe how you did hard reset? I have installed TomTom and I have lost the audio. I need to do hard reset but I am getting mixed information on how to do it.
1) Press and hold the Calendar button, the Power button, and the Messaging button.
2) While holding these buttons, use the stylus to lightly press the Reset button on the bottom of the HP iPAQ.
3) When the Pocket PC screen begins to fade, release all of the buttons, and then remove the stylus from the Reset button.
The HP iPAQ restarts and powers on

The Following User Says Thank You to Julie For This Useful Post:
I have followd the link to your website and I really like it. It is a bit difficult to acommodate to the dark blue background but apart from that it gives lots of information.
You must be viewing it on a Pocket PC, and you're right it does not look so good on pocket pc. I'm not sure how to make it work better on a Pocket PC, but if you view it on a computer, it has a white background.
