Worried Battery drain...is this normal?

DH gave me a hx2795b for Christmas :) So far it is running great except for the battery. It seems to me to be draining much faster than my x50. He charged it at work (all day) a few days before Christmas, and when I opened it was down to 85%. Since then I have:

updated everything via hewlett packard.com
turned off the today time out
applied the fake server trick

I have not installed any programs, just synced the calendar, contacts and tasks.

Now when I play solitaire or bubble breaker, the battery goes from 100% to 95% in about 20 minutes. All wireless is off and the brightness is set at 1/2 for battery power.

Is this a normal drain? It seems fast to me. If not, any suggestions on what to try before I call HP?

Thanks!
Wendy

That's about six hours and forty minutes of battery on the iPAQ :) My X50 (continuous use) would give me about three and a half hours (that's inputting data continuously for the three and a half hours on a battery that's a couple of years old) with all wireless turned off.

All in all, I don't think that's a bad performance.

Yeah, 5% in 20 minutes is reasonable.

I think we all have a tendency to micromanage the battery at first. Just use the device. If you're getting 6+ hours from a charge then that's about right. When you first get the thing the tendency is to play with it a lot. You'll find in normal use that it lasts all day, and then some.

Also - if you're running WM5 you don't have to worry about data loss anyway, even if you did run down the battery.

Thanks guys. I was micromanaging it because of some things I read I guess I should just play with it first before panicing :)

Thanks again!!!

Congratulations on your new IPAQ! I hope you enjoy it! If you decide you need to get an extended battery, this one works great in my hx2415:

I would probably get an extra battery myself but the cradle for the HP isn't like the Axim one - it doesn't have a charging slot. I'd either have to buy a separate charger or swap the batteries and then put it on charge. Nuts ... I'm sick of tinkering with it. So I just bought a spare charger to keep in my duffel bag. The battery lasts pretty long anyway and I can just plug the thing into the wall wherever I am if I have to charge it.

I don't want "care & feeding" of this thing to become a primary activity! It's supposed to be a tool.

Well, I have very unscientific proof that it is draining faster than my ax. I charged them both to 100%, took them both off the charger at the same time and left them overnight. This morning the ax is at 99% and the ipaq is at 94%. I guess it's not that much, but I would think that a brand new 1440 battery would outlast a 20 month old 1100.

Wendy ... knock it off, will ya? ;) You're going to drive yourself nuts!

The two devices are probably running a different mix of programs. Sounds like the HP may be running a background task that the Ax isn't. Also ... you can't always count on the battery meter being completely accurate from one device to another. Even on my Axim I could observe different rates of drain at different stages of use. I.E. ... sometimes it would SEEM to drain a whole lot faster at the "top end" but then it would take forever to get from 70% to 60%. The battery circuit can't ascertain exactly how much charge is in there all the time - it's an estimate.

If you're using something like SPB Pocket Plus turn off that stupid percentage-based battery indicator and turn on the little 4-segment one.

Monitor the battery on your PPC like you do on your cell phone. If it's got "enough" then use the thing. If not, stick it on a charger. You got more important things to do than worry about how the battery is draining! Use it for a few days ... are you getting that nag screen that says your battery is critically low? If you're getting through the day and never seeing that then what's to worry, eh? Carry a charger with you just in case but otherwise, RELAX! Use the thing until it wears out!

Do you stop and "top off" your gas tank all the time? Of course not, you buy gas when you get down around a quarter-tank or so (right?). Don't treat this any different. Gas it up when it needs it - otherwise just use it!

Alright alright

I get your point. I am enjoying my new toy anyway. I have to admit I like the finger scan thing :) I'm having a bit of trouble with the wifi, but I shall continue to troubleshoot it.

The only thing I've installed so far (aside from updates) is pocket breeze. I may spend New Years Day installing programs (at least until the Rose Bowl comes on)

Wendy, I woke up this morning thinking of you Well, actually I woke up thinking about your battery :)

The clue was your comment about the finger scan thing: if you are using the Credant software, that is, almost certainly, what is causing the battery drain! For some reason, the software turns the device on periodically to encrypt the folders. I haven't figured out how to stop it and I'm still playing with the settings in order to determine if the Windows timeout (Battery off) settings interfere with the Credant timeout settings.

Nonetheless, the battery drain is usage rather than drainage and the only sure way to stop it is to turn off the Credant security software. Julie supplied a useful link in the thread where CB & I introduced our new toys - I'll dig it up.

Hope this helps

As I sit here typing this with my new toy on the cradle, it did turn itself on. :) Oh well, I can live with that for the security feature.

Although I do wonder why it would turn itself on and encrypt files that are already encrypted

I'm still immensly enjoying it. Now that I've reloaded PB and iLauncher, I have to play with the today screen to get it like I like it. I was pleasently suprised how easily I was able to transfer my music with a thumb drive and card reader

These HP's are very nice, indeed. I'm on the couch with mine right now. :) Very pleased with it: a worthy replacement for the Ax.
