Can't update bios on hx2795b

I did a hard reset on my ipaq in earlier this month and ever since I have a horrible lag time when turning on the device. I remembered that when I first got the unit last Christmas I updated the bios& drivers , so I am attempting to do that again. I am getting this error message when trying the bios (drivers worked fine):

ERROR 608: Could not initialize device

RUUClientDriver.dll could not initialize this device
This may not be the correct DLL for this iPAQ Pocket PC and this NBF File

From what I gather from searching, I'm finding that people say you can't do HP updates on a vista machine. I no longer have access to a xp machine...so now what? Is there something I can do or do I have to live with this lag?

Thanks!

When you install and updated bios to a pocket pc, the update is usually permanent and a hard reset (aka factory reset) does not change that - the ROM is rewritten when a bios is installed - so there should be no reason to reinstall the bios. But drivers may need to reinstalled. What exactly are you attempting to reinstall on your pocket pc.

Unfortunately, there's no way around it. You need to perform the update from an XP computer. Perhaps you can use a friend's or family member's computer to run the update.

Can you provide more information about the lag you are experiencing on your pocket pc?

The drivers updated fine...the bios is what is giving me the error message. By lag I mean when I hit the power switch it is a good 5-10 seconds before the today screen pops on. Also sometimes I have to press the power button a few times to get it to turn on.

What BIOS update do you think you need to install (please provide the service paq number or a link to the HP Downloads page that includes the BIOS update)?

Can you check to see what ROM version is running on the device? [tap Start > Settings > System tab > HP Asset Viewer > Version tab]

Have you installed any software to the device yet? If so, what software have you installed?

Julie...thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I'm sorry it has taken me so long to gather this information. All I can say is 4 kids (including a 10 month old with an aversion to sleep) + homeschooling = frazzled mom.

Anyhoo.....my rom is 1.02.00H and this is the one I am trying to install http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport..._I23561-108719

And to be honest the only thing different that I can see is my rom date is 5/23/06 and this one is 6/15/06. However I know I installed this before and I have never had this lag problem. As for programs, here's what I have currently installed:

VidaOne My Personal Diet
hp hx200b WM5 drivers update
spb pocket plus
Pocket quicken 2.5
olive tree bible reader
memmaid
spb backup
quickverse
monopoly
lafemme
listpro
mobipocket

I had all these and a few more installed before the reset with the exception of My Personal Diet...this was new after the reset. The only other thing I can think of is I tried several different diet programs (after the reset) and uninstalled all but My Personal Diet. I have since done a hard reset, but not a clean reset.

Any help you could give would be great. A few second lag doesn't seem like it would be a big deal, but it is a huge pain when I just need to quickly check my to do list or enter my food eaten and it takes FOREVER!!!

Thanks again!!!!

Hey Wendy,

Ahh, the frazzled homeschool Mom. My wife's been through that - I think you two would get along great! Our two, however, are 19 and 16 so we're just about over that deal.

Back to topic: I noticed that on my hx2495b the same symptom you're seeing. After a re-flash/reload the device came on almost instantaneously. Over time the power-up would get slower-and-slower sometimes taking as much as 5 seconds to come on.

At one point I thought I had pinned the problem down to the today plugin for spb Pocket Plus or Pocket Informant. After turning it off it seemed to speed the power-up cycle. However during one of my several "rebuild" episodes I left Pocket Plus out of the loop for awhile - sure enough, after several days to a week the power-on started slowing down again.

The last time I rebuilt it I seemed to have less trouble with that - I'm still not sure if it's the combination of things I was installing or what. However one thing I did notice ... I didn't use the device as much this last time and the slowdown didn't seem to happen quite as badly. Who knows at this point what it was?
I finally gave up on it for other reasons, though ... decided my Moto-Q was enough "Pocket PC" for now so I'm out of tinkering mode for the moment.

I agree with Julie here, though ... you might have to go find an XP box to reflash your device. Looks like HP hasn't kept up with Vista yet - at least not with "older" devices.

I located an XP computer :) I forgot hubby brought one home a couple of weeks ago (Honestly my house is not that messy...I'm just that absent minded.) I'm doing a sync & backup, then I'm going to reflash. Hope this works!
