iPaq 2000 WM5 V1.00.01 ROM (un)released

06/11/06 ITS NO LONGER ON THE HP SITE.
I guess it went to the same place as the bluetooth upgrade that was released a few months ago.

---- original post -----

http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/HandheldiPAQ/us/locate/1129_6285.html

It fixes nothing important.
It actualy seems to be exactly what was in the prveious Firmware patch but now in rom.

The HP Protect/Credant random turn on bug is still there.
The no alarms if wifi is left on and sd card is installed is still there.

WARNING! WARNING!
Installing this rom update will erase your pda.

WARNING! WARNING!
Sprite Backups rom upgrade doesn't work, has never worked with an hp2790, and they are in denial so won't fix it.
Be prepared to spend a few hours putting your pda back together after the rom "sidegrade".

Verdict: waste of time and another reason to never buy another HP product.

Software and Drivers - HP iPAQ hx2700 Pocket PC Series hx2790, Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0

is the very same pointer given to me on a HP chat with the 2 files; Rom update and Firmware update, which I'm told updates the pre B 279x to the B model. No other differences I was told. Run the Rom update first followed with soft reset then run the firmware update and you now have a B unit..

Went There, Did That.

FWIW

HP taketh away....

In true incompetant form, the ROM update has disappeared from the 2790 downloads site at HP.

This is getting ridiculous and would be funny if it wasn't such a tragic example of just how disorganised and stupid HP is.

What are we to think?
1st they release a ROM update that does nothing different than their previous "firmware" update.
They have their users lose all their data and rebuild their pda's.
The update doesn't address the well known flaws that render an expensive feature useless.
THEN they withdraw the update.

Hardly inspires any confidence whatsoever.

What a bunch of idiots.....

and, its back!

so HP have put the V1.00.01 ROM back on their download site.

Its Byte for Byte identical to the first one just in case anyone was getting their hopes up that HP may have actualy fixed anything important.

It really doesnt inspire any confidence whatsoever that HP cant even run their web site properly. They have a long history of confusing, misleading, changing and incorrect information. Especialy for the 279x machine.

They announced the "b" version with the extra memory, then withdrew the announcement and specs from the web site, suckering us into buying their old stock. Then they released the b version after they emptied their warehouse at our expense.

They had a bluetooth patch up for a while and silently withdrew it. Of course the bluetooth patch was built in to the firmware update (thats now become a ROM update) in other countries, only North America had it split.

Anyway, enjoy the ROM update while it lasts :) no telling when it will go away.

I suspect that the ROM update was released for legal reasons so we cant claim that they have dropped support.

The Amazing Disappearing ROM

Now you see it...
Now you don't....

Its gone AGAIN!

I don't think its a conspiracy, Bill, it must be just a figment of a deranged mind :)

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean everyone ISN'T out to get me!

I'm truly amazed at the incompetence in the HP web dept. It must be wonderful to work there. Huge mistakes all the time and no-one does anything about it.

Proposed new slogan for HP.
"Providing job security for the chronically incompetent"

At least its entertainment :)

Don't notice any great improvement. I did it to be able to say I now have a 2795 series 2...you know "latest & greatest" It's still WM5 and NOT Wmobile version 2...IMHO slower and STILL somewhat flakey for all the press that WM5 gets. Makes one wonder just how we got force-fed this thing anyway? Have any manufacturers brought out their second generation WM5 machines yet?

Take Care
