HP BT Keyboard input, over prolonged period in Word mobile, Word mobile doesn't let me save document anywhere, error "Not enough Memory" when there is over 4gb on CF, SD, ROM.


I've got an hx 2490, which I've had since the start of this year, used with HP bluetooth keyboard to take notes at meetings. In the past 3 weeks Word Mobile has been giving me the message, (after a 3h meeting and relevant notes), that I can't save the file, that there isn't enough memory, I try all the different options - my 2gb Sandisk Ultra II SD card, my 4gb Seagate CF miniHD and the main memory it simply ignores it. I haven't had a problem like this before and have previously spent over 4-5 h writing up reports with no hiccups. I keep all programs closed in the background (I use Wisbar Advance 2), I have over 30mb of free memory on the PDA and ample on my other disks. It just won't let me save the file anywhere.

The only programs installed in the ROM are Today plugins and programs which are required to be in the ROM but their large database files are on the CF HD.

This has happened on 2 occasions and both times I've had to soft reset and humble myself to the guy next to me running an IR keyboard with a Palm TX (which I was going to get but preferred the multitasking of PPCs) for him to beam his notes to me and then endure his gloating which continues on to how Palm and Mac are far superior technologies
Something I noticed last time was the BT keyboard program disappeared, it wasn't visibly minimised as other running programs are and when I tried messing around getting to the Today screen and what not the icon would flicker on and off and when I finally give in to Word and click discard file, the BT KB program appears. (If you're wondering the Word files are only 100kb at the most in size). It also appears on the startup when I soft reset, looking for the keyboard.

The only thing I've done since everything worked perfectly (so perfectly that I uninstalled SKTools lite so I couldn't free up my RAM) was
- installed Opera Mobile
- Moved all my temporary files and caches to the CF card uninstalled and reinstalled Egress.

I can't reproduce the problem, it only ever seems to happen when I'm at a meeting at inputting data for a long period via the BT KB.
Is it possible that I am accidentally shutting down the BT KB program instead of minimising it and throughout that time it's trying to continuously start up in the background while still allowing input from the KB.

It's funny (not really) because I was gonna post a new thread about this very same thing. I just sold my 4700 for a 2795b and was ready to enjoy the memory that it comes with. Not all the time, but sometimes, it says "not enough memory to save document" just like what you're saying, when really there is. Maybe someone else can help us because I'm not sure why this comes up!

Oh, and I should mention that it happens when I'm using the HP foldable keyboard that the device plugs into.

Wow, so it just isn't me!

Either we're not getting a response to this because everybody on Mobility Site were too smart to buy an HP branded keyboard, they don't use keyboards with their PDAs or it's actually so easy to fix that everybody is ignoring the post.:p

Does the HP plugin keyboard you use come with an HP program to be installed on the PDA?

Yeah I hear ya; maybe this is just an odd problem, but it is weird to me that no one replied yet. Yes my ipaq came w/this from HP, which I currently have installed: Software and Drivers - download HP iPAQ Foldable Keyboard Driver Update, 2.0.0.8

You have the latest driver and I've got the latest drive for our respective keyboards.

Do you run many today screen plugins programs?

Wisbar Advance 2
Pocket Breeze
iLauncher
Pocket Weather
Egress

This can't be the problem though because it never occured before when I had all of these programs running.

Anyhow I'm going to try again Wednesday, I'll leave the keyboard driver app open and switch directly to Word, plus I'll regularly clean up RAM via SKtools and will periodically save and exit then open the document (it's going to be painful).:rolling:

Maybe I'll also exit out of wisbar advance 2.

I also cleaned up my ROM, deleted any unnecessary skins that I'm not using.

My question to you guys would be:

What is the EXACT amount of memory in use? I'm not talking about your CF/SD card etc., I'm talking about your running applications free memory.. You know, the amount that the 'memory' icon on the today screen shows...

(Program) Memory in use is is 24.23 mb out of a possible 56.59 mb, I believe this is the memory that acts as RAM.
Free memory is 32.36 mb about 43% is in use with no programs running, even when I turn off Wisbar (all other today plugins still running).

My program memory is using 27MB, with 29MB free. My storage memory has 72MB in use, and 180MB free.

Had another meeting yesterday, and yay no hiccups. I have to say I did move almost every program that didn't interface with the the Today screen onto my CF drive and cleared my RAM before connecting to the keyboard via bluetooth. However I was paranoid :rolling: throughout the meeting, saving every time there was a pause.

Everything's back to being stable so I should really do another backup.

I also had my free memory showing at the top of the screen. I found a post on Aximsite saying that Word Mobile requires atleast 9mb free RAM to save otherwise it throws a tantrum, if it does, then just select all the text, copy, close word mobile, start it up again and paste. It should save from there.

I still wish I bought a different BT keyboard, this one sucks up battery power, 2 AAA batteries don't last more than 3 days, if left witihin the keyboard.

At random times, my PPC is still unable to save word docs. Not all the time, probably 10% of the time.

Did you try the copy and paste technique?
What are your Today Screen programs/plugins and are there any programs in your ROM that aren't required to be there? Skins that you don't use?
See if there are still active programs in the RAM, go to System Info, click Program Memory and then click running programs, or just initiate iTask.

I really don't know how else to help.

I have been doing the copy and paste technique, thank you. I don't have any today screen plug ins. Also I always make sure no programs are running in ROM. The good thing, is that it hasn't happened in a week so if it's so rare I'm okay w/it.
