hx2795b fails to hard-reset after unsuccessful attempt to install ROM udpate

After continuous battery drainage issues caused by SD card problems on hx2*** series, I tried to install the HP-recommended ROM update (HP iPAQ hx2700 Pocket PC series*-* HP iPAQ hx2000b Pocket PC Series ROM Update - HP Business Support Center

During the update installation process, I got an error (something to the extent of USB connection timeout...) and the PDA completely froze and would not respond to a soft reset. I proceeded with a hard reset (by pushing the Contacts and iTask buttons at the same time + stylus inserted in the "soft-reset" slot on the bottom of the PDA). This resulted in my screen going white and nothing else. The PDA does not respond to anything, a soft-reset only turns the screen off; another hard-reset will yield the same "white screen".

Has anyone experienced similar problems? Any suggestions to bring my PDA back to life?

If ActiveSync still recognizes your pocket pc, try running the update again. This time, make sure you are plugging your pocket pc directly into AC power (do not rely on USB charging for this) and the USB plug is plugged directly into a USB port on your computer (do not use a USB hub for this).

Remove any storage cards, turn off any power saving options on your computer (you don't want your computer to go into standby or hibernation mode while this is happening).

If ActiveSync does not recognize your pocket pc, you'll probably need to contact HP and find out what your options are.

sent in for reflashing

The handheld would no longer react to any action (soft-reset/hard-reset/clean reset), nor would MS ActiveSync see it. I called HP and they concluded that the ROM image got corrupted during the update process (apparently this does happen quite often), and they said my only option is to send it in to a Service Center for ROM reflashing, which I did last night. I'm yet to find out how long will it take to get this done.

My work around

Kept getting the same thing. To get around this leave the USB connection and use external power to the craddle.
