Advantages of VGA
I am excited about the VGA screen but wonder why I see something that looks just like current 240x320 ipaq's - my 3835. I was hoping to see a picture showing the calendar and you could see a ton of stuff. I'm hoping that there is a place to adjust this. I have really good vision and had the HP centrino 15.4" screen with 1920x1200 resolution and had no problems reading it from like 4 feet away. Does anyone have any ideas on this.?

In addition, I am preparing for my new ipaq by taking movies that I haven't seen or would like to watch on my ipaq and converting them to the correct MPG1 format. My question is: How possible is recording these videos at 640x480? It seems like my VBR 500 Kb would have to be increased four times since it has four times the pixels. I would think that doing this would provide breathtaking results, but I don't think I have the memory to do that. At my current setting (w/ 128kb audio), it takes between 300-480mb for an average size movie. This is a lot of data and x4 would be about 1.5 GB! Then, I'd have to get the 2.2gb magistor! Plus, will this 600mhz pda be fast enough to play it smoothly? Thanks...

Wow! That looks like a really nice program. I am wondering...is it free? That would be awesome. It let me download it and I didn't see a place to buy it! I love free software. I won't be able to test it until I get my HX4705, but also, what about other programs? Oh well, thanks a lot and maybe I'll just wait until I get it and then decide what I need.

So how much is the full version? I will have to wait until I get my HX4705 and see how I like it. I was really hoping to see a really small top bar (with start menu) and bottom menu so that the main screen would be really nice. I was worried that the device wouldn't have the best software (Windows Mobile 2003 SE) that would fully utilize the VGA screen. I hope I'm not diasppointed.

If you know of any other programs that let you have full pda REAL VGA screen, please let me know. Otherwise, once I get my HX4705, I will try what you submitted earlier and if it does what I want, I may buy. How much is it?

I'm worried because after the research that I've done, it looks like the pda feels just like a QVGA screen, but just more detailed. I think that is useless! I was hoping for the text and pictures to get smaller - or at least for an option built into the OS to change this. I hope I'm not making a mistake by jumping on with the HX4705 instead of waiting for an os upgrade or new ipaq to come out in a year or so...

I was thinking the same thing, and chose instead the 5555 [as it was the best available IMHO at the time] but I think its appeal for me mostly is SD & CF, M$/SE [ie update, native, landscape, wpa], and chip speed.

Yes, MS, in their infinite wisdom decided that VGA doesn't really mean VGA. All of the built in Apps are HI-RES, they look really good, but don't display a more pixels or information.

However, third party developers can take advantage of the VGA resolution. Pocket Informant, for example makes excellent use of VGA and depening on your eye-sight you can shrink the font to display even more.

SE_VGA is free. The biggest drawback with this program is it requires a soft reset to invoke, and some programs may only run in a quarter of your screen while using it.

Ouch! I was hoping the VGA screens would provide true resolution natively. Providing "tastes great, less filling" pixel apps is nice, but users [such as I] would rather have the option to get what I'm paying for, and not just lipstick.

Let's not forget that the OS hooks are then followed on by the apps implementation of those features. This is the first release with the high dpi capability. The apps will follow. As always happens in the computer world; first the hardware develops the capability and then the software exploits it. The MS OS team is on their track while the apps team is doing their thing. I'm confident that the next realease will take better advantage of the high dpi capabilities. Keep in mind also that the high dpi capabilities is not just for the PPC. It was added to support other devices in addition to the PPC. That means that we will see clamshell devices and more embedded applications running the OS in the future. PPC is just one segment of MSs greater plan. They are very methodical about taking each step with purpose and intent. It's frustrating at times, but it will come. Patience, grasshopper.

yeah you're probably right, but given recent history it might be prudent to buy that unit at that time and you're not 100% likely to be able to get the newer release on these/current VGA units.
