Difference between 4700 & 4705
I emailed HP yesterday asking the difference between the two and this is what I received:

Quote:
There are two differences between the HP iPAQ HX4700 (product number
FA282A) and the HP iPAQ HX4705. The HP iPAQ HX4700 is sold as a commercial product whereas the HP iPAQ HX4705 is sold as a retail model.
The HP iPAQ HX4705 ships with one additional software program: Resco File Explorer.

Resco File Explorer 2003 is a powerful file management utility for your Pocket PC. It implements all standard features such as file/folder manipulation. Thus, you can copy, move or delete files, create folders, run programs with arguments, and search for files or folders. File Explorer 2003 is a complex solution of the following modules:

-Strong File Encryption
-ZIP Compression
-The File Manager
-The built-in viewer
-The Network Browser
-The Registry Editor

Also, I asked about the vibrate function and here is what I was told:
Quote:
Thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard.

The HP iPaq series do not support "vibrate" functions. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

I hope I have thoroughly answered all of your presales questions.
Please reply to this message if we can be of further assistance.

For your convenience, you can also call our Presales Department at 1-800-752-0900 (6:30am - 6:30pm, Mon-Fri, and 8am - 5pm Sat, Mountain Time). Our Hewlett-Packard representatives are trained professionals who can help you decide on the right HP product for you.
Nice to see a pre-sales phone number. I haven't tried it yet...

How do you get that they are including Resco with this? It doesn't sound like that to me! That would be awesome if they were though. Also, I'm very angry that they aren't including Vibrate. I have never got to use that feature.

The HP rep I emailed said Resco is included with the 4705...
Depending on the way you carry the iPaq, you may not even feel the vibrate mode. On my 5550, carrying it in the included soft case, I was able to feel it, but in the aluminum Rhino Skin that hung on the belt by a clip, I was not. BUT, in a noisey computer room, vibrate mode is the only thing that got my attention. I never hear the sounds. I guess I will miss it a little too!

I guess I forgot to say this: the included Resco File Explorer is a trial. That's listed right on the specs at HP.com for the HX4705. I was hoping the rep said it was the full version but I remember it saying that it's a trial. They include a lot of trials with this. What a waste! I could download trials any day of the week. I don't like having any trials installed nor do I like having trials and then uninstalling them. If I do that, I am always tempted to Hard Reset and reinstall. As I said earlier, I know Townsends!

I'm saying that I know some Townsends and they are related to me. Maybe I know you or are related to you. One of the Townsends I know definately has an iPaq.

I wonder why such the price difference if the only difference is REALLY only Resco and putting the "consumer" name on it vs the "corporate"? I expect HP doesn't want to let too much info out too eary....

You may view a nice review at the address below. Also, notice the poll at the bottom of the page! About 70% of the people who are at the site are going to buy a HX4705 (not surprising when you consider that most of the people who want one are looking for review sites)...

IPaq 4700 and 4705
I was told by ecost that another difference was color. According to Rome, the 4705 is a lighter silver color and the 4700 is the darker color.

Also, the price is different too. He told me he could sell me the 4705 for 579.00 +TAX+HANDLING

The 4700 was 606.00 + TAX+HANDLING...

That's an old poll.

And online polls like that are usually a highly inaccurate sample of the population here.

ok, cdw lists the 4700 as 630.50 and the 4705 as 591.42. i bought it at pcconnection and they matched cdw's prices. i am a corporate customer however, so the prices listed might be different for you normal people. ;-)
ps- the cost for the 4700 is close to 591 so if you want to try to haggle someone on the phone- that's some ammo. you didn't get that info from me!

I believe its really the included or lack of included software that makes the difference.

...And is the extra $50 or there-abouts, worth it? I didn't think there was THAT much difference to warrant the cost...
