SD card vs. Compact Flash
Why is SD cards more expensive? Wouldn't people buy the Flash Card for the HX4705 rather than the more expensive SD card?

Take a look at this:

http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?DPNo=491666

Now with 80X speed, it is more expensive than the 1 gig SD found here:

http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?DPNo=401035

Which one would you buy?

Is buying a 1 gig Flash Card with 80X speed a waste since I think the 80X speed is only good for writing so it is good for SLR cameras and does didley squat for Pocket PC?

SD cards are generally more expensive due to the manufacturing requirements to get the flash memory into a very small footprint.

I have both a high speed SD and a regular SD.... For the IPAQ it does not make any difference. Save the $30 and go to a restaurant.

... except that you might use the CF slot for a GPS receiver, camera, scanner, and so on. SDIO slots aren't so steady... and there is much less offer for SDIO based devices. So i think SD is the choice.

Cheers, Ugo

SD is more versatile.
how about just wanting to use the SD memory in a camera or phone or interchange it with some other device.

Most camera manufacturers are moving from CF to SD now if you look at recent models. And as far as I know, there are phones out there that use SD, but none that use CF.

Personally, I used both CF and SD simultaneously to maximize memory. Furthermore, my SD can be swapped between my camer and my ipaq.

I use both SD and CF memory, but prefer CF for stability.
Have many issues with SD cards, none with CF cards.
Losing them is another issue. SD cards "pop" in and out, CF cards do not. Lost 2 SD cards in the past, have yet to lose a CF card.
CF cards are cheaper as well (typically).
My SLR uses CF cards, as do many SLR cameras.

I'm a CF type of guy I suppose

True to an extent. The lower end cameras mostly use SD cards. Mainly the "point and shoot" digital cameras. Most high-end (SLR) cameras use the CF format.

I personally have had some pretty horrible instances with SD cards and I really dont like them.

I've had corrupted data.......and now my current problem is that my 1 gig SD card thinks its a 600mb card............400mb not usable

High speed SD cards.
Not had any problems with either SD or CF but I can confirm that there is a difference in speed with some SD cards. I've got a 512Mb standard Kingston SD and borrowed a high speed Pamasonic SD card, my Canon Ixus 40 will shoot continuously with the Panasonic card (I got bored after 60 shots) but the Kingston card shot 8 pictures and then started delaying as it wrote the data. It's very handy having 2 slots as I can transfer my camera/video pics onto my 4Gb microdrive when away from my home and then use the camera again.

Another thig to keep in mind is where will you be performing the bulk of your data transfer to the SD card?
From the PDA itself, or a card reader on your PC?

I do most of my file transfer on the PC and then pop the card into the pda; so the faster card does work for me inthat respect.

I agree but as I use the MD in my 4700 for playing music and watching video/pictures it's perfect, the point I was making was that there really is a difference in the speed of different cards and you need to make sure you get what suits the use you want to put it to. The MD doesn't need to be lightning fast for me as it's a large storage drive used in my PDA, the SD card does need to be fast so that it doesn't slow down my camera but when transferring between the 2 the speed limitation of the MD isn't an issue.

Is that comparing a 4GB SD card to the 4GB MicroDrive?
