New Owner Thoughts
Well I cancelled my x50v order and picked up a hx4700 from Office Depot yesterday. It wsn't that bad of a deal since they offer a free membership that gives you 10% back on all of your purchses. Plus instant gratification is always nice The wait for the x50v was just too long. I was also disappointed in the emulator performance on the x50v. Not to mention I never liked the look of the x50v.

Over my life I have went from a Palm IIIxe to a Palm V to a Zaurus 5500 to a Sony NR70v to a Ipaq 2215 to a 4155 to a Treo 600 and a Zaurus c860. So far I am happier with the hx4700 than any of the others. I sat in bed last night and browsed the internet for an hour or two. I never did that with the others because they were just to hard to use for internet browsing. There was always too much scrolling with the older PDAs. Even without SE_VGA I could easily browse this forum and a number of other sites. I even placed an order on Cases.com from the Ipaq.

I love the look of the hx4700. I think it is the best looking PDA I have had. The metal casing is a nice touch. I was a little worried about the size but I don't have any problem with it. It is very thin and smaller than the Zaurus.

I loaded Morphgear on it and ran Final Fantasy 4 without a problem. The touchpad isn't as bad as people make it sound. It was quite easy to use, and I do like the calendar, address book, etc... buttons. I can't see myself using cursor mode often but I like the touchpad for regular use as much as a dpad.

This is the fastest PDA I have used. Web browsing was extremely slow on the Treoo 600 and not the best on the 4155. I can actually see myself using the hx4700 on the couch instead of sitting on the computer browsing the internet.

I was a little worried about the pressing down on the screen and seeing the LCD rainbow/smear effect. It is no where as bad as the Treo 600. Under normal use I barely notice it. On the Treo I would press down and 3/4 of the screen would give that effect. Besides that the hx4700's screen is a sight to behold.

Tonight I am going to load the rest of my PPC apps and watch a few movies on it.

So far this is the best PDA purchase I have made. I am happy I picked it up instead of waiting for the Dell.

WOW. I still have time to cancel my order also, At first I did not care for the look of the Hx4700. After I looked at the pics on pdagold I think it looks really sharp. The Dell really hyped with the 3D chip but from everything I have been reading it does not appear that it will do to much in everyday use. I have that smearing effect on my T3 and it's not really noticeable unless you apply more pressure than usual. I hope to see the Hx4700 at CUSA this weekend and maybe I will bite the bullet.

I've had mine for a couple weeks now. I really do like it, except for the touchpad. I do like to play a game once in a while, even if only 5min a day, and unless it's a stylus game (e.g. Jawbreaker), forget it. I am getting used to using the touchpad for scrolling when reading, but it's still not as comfortable as a D-pad, where you can rest your thumb on it. I won't part with the hx4700, but I hope an upcoming model has a D-pad instead.

i remeber when i got a palm tungsten t (original version) i couldn't believe the beauty of the screen (320x320). Now when i look at it it looks like crap. then i look at my palm IIIc screen (160x160) and i black out for 30 minutes
Update
The speed is crazy compare to my tungsten t which ive used since it came out. I remember it would take like 2-3 seconds to load a 150kb photo. With the hx4700 a 500kb photo load instantly

That's funny about the screens, because I put my old Jornada 567 on eBay this week. When I first got it, I thought it was like a spaceship or something. This week I turned it on and I was like "man, what happened to this thing? Is something wrong with it?" No, it's just a hooptie!

I think I understand you to say you like the hx4700?

I've had mine long enough to know that you get used to the touchpad after a while. The only thing I didn't like about it so far is the price. With the larger battery capacity and slightly physically larger screen, it's the top of the heap for me.

I made the mistake of setting the touchpad to the absolute lightest touch setting in the control panel because i figured i did have a light touch... this makes it way too sensitive and youll see the cursor jumping around everywhere. So if anyone else has done that... put it back to defaults! I'm almost exclusively using cusor mode at the moment to avoid scratching my screen before i get protectors. It really is a handy feature!

I also am slightly disappointed in the price but I will say this--as long as they don't go any higher in price. I paid around the same amount (actually more because I paid tax and got an extended warranty--and retail!) for my 3835 and that is like a joke now. I had a wifi card for it for about 5 months but I sold it and got about the same amount that I paid out of it. After I sold it, they began dropping in price more. I love built in wifi and I think I will like bluetooth as soon as I get bluetooth headphones and possibly a keyboard. Can I use a bluetooth mouse for it?

Also--this is my favorite thread. I love people just posting simple bits of info and stories about their feelings about the hx4700...now I'll post mine. I am very happy with the size of this (small than my 3835), the screen is amazing, touchpad is okay/good when you get used to it, features are awesome, and last but obviously not least--I really like the speed, especially while loading websites. An example is "The Travel Collection" which is a collection of 6 games took a LONG time to load on my 3835 but I can load it on my hx4700 in around 5 seconds.

I know what you mean about the speed. Browsing is so nice on the 4700.

I'm just going to throw my two cents in. I've had my hx4700 for just a hair over two weeks now, and I love it. The only thing I haven't even bothered with trying to get used to yet is the touchpad, but that I plan on doing eventually.

I originally came from a Handspring (that doesn't work any longer), and while it was a good device, it simply couldn't do what I wanted it to do. Nothing against PalmOS either, but I like the Windows-based better, especially for work and such.

I haven't installed a whole lot on it yet, nor have I really had time to do much yet. I have installed NetStumbler, which I was bummed to see didn't work. WiFiFoFum, which does and I love (I'm in the IT security field, and it's a very very handy tool to have). Pocket Streets, which is annoying, sadly, but still very useful. And a couple of games, I think.

Ultimately though, I love the fact that it's VGA. I love being able to browse the web and it actually be relatively readable. I love opening up Informant 5 and seeing everything look great because of the resolution.

There's lots of things I love about this thing, and I imagine I'll only find more. The things I love about it definitely outweight the few things I don't like about it.

I second everything you said originally! I also really like the USB 2.0 compatibility!
