Here are my observations regarding this issue:
1.) I also own 2 laptops, one of which also has a Synaptics touchpad, and it expieriences the same issue from time to time. Same fix, a reboot takes care of it.
2.) Seems that the touchpad picks a direction (or the middle button) and decides that you are touching that direction constantly. This results in, for example, when you're at the start menu in the "Programs" submenu, the hx4705 constantly scrolls up or down through the list of programs and wont stop unless you hold the opposite direction on the touchpad, which wont move it in that direction but will cancel out the movement until you let go.
3.) The cursor "elasticity" issue occurs at the same time the stuck-direction issue occurs. This can be observed by switching from navigation mode to cursor mode and vice versa when the glitch pops up.
4.) The issue seems more likely to come up after heavy use of the touchpad. Of course, it could just be that's when its most noticable.
As a side note, I've noticed that my touchpad is beginning to feel a little spongy under the up part of the pad, moreso than the other directions. What I mean is that it still works properly and all, but when I touch the up portion of the pad I can feel the pad sink a little bit into the unit with the pressure from my finger. I dont recall the pad feeling like this before, it doesnt appear to be lifting from the surface at all, just giving more, and only under the top portion of the pad. Coincidentally, or not, the up direction is the direction that usually expieriences the glitch. Possibly related?!
