Synaptic Touchpad - Anyone else have this problem?
It all started when I pressed my calendar button one day and realized that it went straight to align screen. It eventually corrected itself but I came across a posting that said that calendar button + directional key (some direction, anyway) was a hardware shortcut to align screen.

My problem is I find that the touch pad sometimes goes crazy. The central "Button?" is sometimes always depressed. Sometimes it gets "stuck" in a certain direction.

I've played around with the sensitivity but to no avail. I have tried to from the beginning avoid the touchpad but now I think I finally have to deal with it.

On cursor mode, it doesn't want to move the arrow most of the time. It's virtually impossible to use on the navigational mode.

Synaptic won't give me the time of day. I dread having to call hp. Anyone else come across this?

When using the VisualIT map of London, my cursor has done some strange things, like its on elastic and is constrained to only part of the screen. This always corrects itself when the unit is powered off and then on again.

No problem so far
Not that I use the touchpad every day (I don't like it), but I do use it every few days for scrolling in PIE and have had no problems like you have described.

Here are my observations regarding this issue:

1.) I also own 2 laptops, one of which also has a Synaptics touchpad, and it expieriences the same issue from time to time. Same fix, a reboot takes care of it.

2.) Seems that the touchpad picks a direction (or the middle button) and decides that you are touching that direction constantly. This results in, for example, when you're at the start menu in the "Programs" submenu, the hx4705 constantly scrolls up or down through the list of programs and wont stop unless you hold the opposite direction on the touchpad, which wont move it in that direction but will cancel out the movement until you let go.

3.) The cursor "elasticity" issue occurs at the same time the stuck-direction issue occurs. This can be observed by switching from navigation mode to cursor mode and vice versa when the glitch pops up.

4.) The issue seems more likely to come up after heavy use of the touchpad. Of course, it could just be that's when its most noticable.

As a side note, I've noticed that my touchpad is beginning to feel a little spongy under the up part of the pad, moreso than the other directions. What I mean is that it still works properly and all, but when I touch the up portion of the pad I can feel the pad sink a little bit into the unit with the pressure from my finger. I dont recall the pad feeling like this before, it doesnt appear to be lifting from the surface at all, just giving more, and only under the top portion of the pad. Coincidentally, or not, the up direction is the direction that usually expieriences the glitch. Possibly related?!

I have a problem that many probably have experienced. When I listen to music with PocketMusic, I put my ipaq in my pocket. When I want to change songs or, even worse, increase the volume, I reach down and try to guess where I need to tap the touchpad and even if I touch it exactly where I should, it always sends a left or right signal and changes the song. This is VERY annoying. I usually have to take my ipaq out of my pocket to increase the volume. Dont' you hate it when it is a song you like so you're going to increase the volume and you change songs?!

well...i bit the bullet - the touchpad was killing me, i was resetting it constantly because the calendar button was pretty much unusable, i couldn't open any word files because it would perform as if the center button was pressed on the touchpad - my iPAQ is back with HP.

hopefully they send me back a new one.
