Is there a way to disable the touchpad function?

I find that I often touch the touch pad accidentally and it affects the screen that I am working on. Is there a way to disable the touch pad completely and reactivate at will when needed?

I know what you mean, the same thing happens to me. I haven't found a solution yet.

Temporary solution: Switch to Cursor mode

Then move the cursor to the point where it is below bottom of the screen, you wont even notice it there.
