DVD to Pocket PC, anyone used ?

While waiting for my 4700 to arrive I am doing more research on what software to buy to enhance it. One key feature I hope to exploit is the VGA screen to play movies on. I occasionally travel & would love to be able to watch an old favourite film on my 4700.

Has anyone had experience with any software to rip DVDs to small enough files for the PPC such as DVD to Pocket PC?

Interested of Oxford

the new version has a drop down window where you can select 320 x 240, or 640 x 480. The quality DVD-PPC/WM9 is very poor next to PocketDVD/Betaplayer, The files on DVD-PPC are usually only around 300MB for a full movie on the high quality setting.

I can't get it to produce quality good enough for the iPAQ's screen. I will probably need a different programme but I don't have time to do all the multi-step productions that others use to get their high quality movies.

DVD-PPC or Pocket DVD? DVD-PPC is the easiest to use, you can also try CarryDVD which is similar to DVD-PPC and you can us WM9 to view the files.

Pocket DVD is a little more complicated but is actually good when used with Betaplayer

There seems to be some disagreement or is it confusion here. I understand there are 2 or more pieces of software, which is best quality with reasonable file size, 'Pocket DVD' or 'DVD to Pocket PC' ?

If you're going to use DVD for Pocket PC and BetaPlayer be sure to get the cab file that will allow you to play WMV files. See this link for the installation procedures - http://www.ipaqhq.com/forums/showthr...3547#post53547

Try PocketDivXEncoder. It's free, and video quality is excellent if you use the XviD codec. It also supports B-frames, which is nice if you have the CPU for it - which the 4700 certainly does. I encode smaller than VGA resolutions, such as 512 width, because the resize filters make the difference in video quality negligible. Especially when you factor in movie size and bitrate, which must increase assuming larger resolution and similar quality.
Of course you should do a bunch of test clips and find which settings you prefer. There's a rather nice program called AutoGK http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=64266 and it does almost everything for you. If you're new to ripping/encoding, see doom9.net for tutorials (and DON'T use QPEL or GMC!! they recommend these, but you cannot play them with BetaPlayer)

I use Pocket-DVD Studio for Pocket PC (http://www.pqdvd.com/) to encode and Betaplayer to play.

I tried a few options and found Pocket-DVD Studio to be a very simple way to rip the DVD and generate a very good quality movie in a single step.
