Has anyone tried to use the hx4705 as a tv remote? If so, what was thresults?
I've read some recent threads on this forum that say that the IR transimitter on the 4700 series is not "strong" enough to be used as an IR controller for television. Something about the range being less than 2 or 3 feet. You may want to do a quick search of the threads related to the 4700.

Since the IR is on the bottom of the device (duh!) you will have the hassle of turning the device around (or use the 180degree rotation tool in Tweaks2k2) whilst standing 2" away from the TV. All in all i suggest using your digit finger (v1.00) to change channels

Anything I say will probably be stupid so ignore it anyway
Griffen Total Remote seems to be the best option for the hx4700. Just for a little clarification the hx4700 is not equipped with CIR. But that doesn't mean that it cannot be used as a universal remote control. CIR stands for Consumer IR. Your standard TV remotes for example are CIR which means that the IR signal is much stronger than standard IR. You can get IR boosters for PPC devices. Since the hx4700 is equipped with a CF slot you can also get a CF IR booster. Also take a look at www.pdawin.com. There is a link there for a CF IR booster.

Can either a compact flash IR extention card or the GRIFFIN thingy be used with IR peripherals like a wirless keyboard such as the belkin to extend range and accuracy?

I don't think so. Normally when you have devices like CF IR extenders or the Griffin IR extender they work with certain software. The drivers for the keyboard interface with the OS so it will most likely use the built-in IR port.

I ordered the Griffin Total Remote for my 4705 this morning. I will probably write up a review and submit it here shortly after I have a chance to test this thing out.
I tried using one of the remote control programs with my 4700 and it worked, but the problem was the repeat function. So if I want to change the channel or scroll through a menu, my 4700 would lag...Dunno how the other software work...
