hi,
use these instructions at YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!!!!.. this are for users who use active sync to backup from Tools>Backup/Restore...
basically, the problem happens because you did a hard reset, and initally, when you setup a relationship between a handheld and pc, some *secret* unique files are created that lets activesync know if the device is really trusted...
first make sure your iPaq is DISCONNECTED before continuing...
locate your backup... usually found in....
C:\Documents and Settings\YOURXPUSERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles\YOURIPAQNAME\
in the YOURIPAQNAME you should find 3 files, backup.stg and some .dat files.
copy the backup.stg and dat files to a folder, say c:\ipaqbackup\
once they are copied in a SAFE place, delete the YOURIPAQNAME folder in C:\Documents and Settings\YOURXPUSERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles\
with your hand held STILL disconnected, reboot. this will make active sync forget any device with YOURIPAQNAME (the name of your device).
now, set the name on your IPAQ device to what you want. NOW connect the device to your pc, active sync will now pop up asking what kind of relationship you want, set it up as you normally would.
this process re-creates the
C:\Documents and Settings\YOURXPUSERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles\YOURIPAQNAME\
you will see YOURIPAQNAME folder was recreated by active sync, except, with brand new files inside. go into c:\ipaqbackup\ where you previously saved your backup.stg and dat files. copy from c:\ipaqbackup\ to YOURIPAQNAME folder, overwriting any existing files in YOURIPAQNAME. disconnect yoru device, reconnect your device. let active syinc do its thing. Now you can safely restore from Tools>Backup/Restore... in active sync.
