Maximal memory of cards
I hear contraddictory reports regarding the maximum memory that can be addressed in a compact flash card or a SD card by the 4705.
HP says the limit is 1GB. Also Sandisk admit that there may be limits depending on the hardware and or the operating system.
However, I constantly hear users reporting successful use of up to 4GB.
Anybody knows the "real" story?
Thank You

Hi. Welcome to the site. I haven't heard of any hardware or OS limitations to CF/SD with the 4700. It would be interesting to know if there were any. I currently have several CF and SD cards, but the largest single one is a SanDisk 1Gb SD card.

theres two types of memory slots on the hx4700, SD and CF

for the SD slot, the largest avalible, to my knowledge, by a supplier is 1 GB.

for the CF slot, the largest is somwhere around 5.5 GB. however, i currently use a 4GB CF hatchi microdrive with my hx4700 and it works well. i've never had any problems with it.

I currently use a Hitachi 4GB drive and a Lexar 2GB CF card on my 4705 and have no problems with either. Some, or most, older electronic items (pda's, digital cameras etc.) that have a CF slot do have limitations with regards to support for the file system used on the card or drive, the FAT file system. I think most of the new large capacity (4GB and above) CF or mini hard drives use the FAT 32 file system. Most older electronic items don't support the FAT 32 system, they use an older file system, which I think is called FAT 16. Capacities for consumer-grade CF cards have reached 12GB, though they are cost prohibitive. 4 & 8 GB cards are becoming more commonplace, and prices on these are falling. I think Cowboy219 is correct about the capacity of the consumer mini hard drives.

Hi cowboy219, SanDisk does have a 2Gb SD card (EDIT: oops, not released yet. ETA 12/15/2004). This link may not be best price, just informational.

My sources of 1GB (for compact flash cards) ia HP tech support twice by voice and on-line chat. They do not comment on larger formats, they say that HP only support up to 1GB cards. The second source was Sandisk: they also were kind of precautionary..... they mention possible isues with the pocket PC bus and "other" possible limitations. Finally I found on Microsoft knowledge base an article for Wince "older" than 2003 edition, that speaks about a ceiling to 1GB of external memory.

Considering the costs of high capacity compact and/or SD card I just wanted to be reassured (and you buys have indeed).
Thank you
Sergio

Just purchased a new CF Type II 2.2 Gb compact flash card and cannot seem to get it working. When I insert it into the unit it asks for a driver name and does not recognize the card. Any suggestions?

sergiobiguzzi: I use a 5 gigabyte cf card (seagate st-1 drive), a 2 gigabytes cf card (Sandisk) and a 1 gigabyte sd card (PQI); they all work fine.

JohnMichael: Try formatting it in a card reader connected to a PC.

SanDisk is, therefore, evaluating when to release their 2GB Ultra II SD card, and has not set a ship date at this time.
This is what robgailbraith is reporting. There may be a chance it won't work
