how to flash the ROM???
In another forum, I saw an article on "how to flash the rom" if it is corrupted. I would like to know if this is possible with the 4700.. In addition, I would also like to know if anyone as a copy of the ROM...

I think the White screen of Death (See older article) is due to a corrupted ROM. The simptoms are very similar to an article I saw in other IPAQ forum. Unfortunatly, the instruction of the other older IPAQ do not apply to the 4700.

Thanks

I don't think there has been a ROM update from HP yet so I don't know how you would get a copy to flash the ROM. You may have to send it back to HP.

Thanks, Rob....

I was hoping that someone had a program to create images of rom and allow installation.

As for my unit, I have been waiting for the store to receive new units for an exchange....Since I only had used it for 1 week, I was not confortable to get it repaired (In addition, HP would commit to send back a unit:Repaired or refourbished)

Thanks Anyway.

Sure.

What you will need for this:
1. SD card - at least 256M
2. Cardreader with SD support
3. WinHex editor

The process will be the next:
1. Unpack ROM image from archive (OK, it is not really ROM image, it is SD card image with ROM on it)
2. Run WinHex
3. Select Clone disk (Ctrl-D)
4. Set Source File = your unpacked image, Destination Disk = disk corresponding to SD card in cardreader
5. Set uploading from the first byte (Start sector=0) and upload image to SD card
6. Put your iPAQ in USB/Serial mode. Press Contacts, then Messaging (while holding Contacts), then Calendar (while holding 2), then iTask (while holding 3) and then Reset. You should see HP logo and message "Serial".
6. Insert your SD card. You should see
SD DOWNLOAD
SECTIONS=0
press power
to flash.............
7. Press Power button and wait for
SD DOWNLOAD
SECTIONS=0
DOWNLOAD
COMPLETED
CHECKSUM OK
100%

That's all
(haven't tried it myself, that's only translation from the site above)

Hi... just wondering if anyone's gotten this to work. I unpacked the image and tried to upload it to an SD card but wasn't able to do it. Used 2 different sd cards(256MB and 512MB) on 2 different SD card readers to no avail. When I upload the image, the cards become "unformatted" and require formatting.

Frustrating to be using my 4700 as paper weight... I'd greatly appreciate any help or if someone could point me to another ROM image. Thanks.

Any (almost) firmware images have a checksum to check the integrity of the image. Any (again, almost) firmware upgrading procedure should check the checksum.

Well, I downloaded 3 files compressed in RAR format. The ROM image, or more accurately, the image of SD memeory with ROM image, was spanned on 3 files which decompressed fine, which I believe indicates the integrity of the said SD image itself.

Unfortunately, having said that, the image did not work as was supposed to. I think that the image was correctly compressed but the image itself did not have any checksum or any other indicators that it was in fact the correct ROM file.

In any case, any help on ROM image for hx4700 will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
