USB charging issue
When 4700 is in the dock & AC supply ON, the orange charging light is always flashing (or ON when fully charged), no matter the machine itself is ON or OFF.

When 4700 is in the dock & AC supply OFF, I turn on USB charging, the orange charging light is only ON when the machine is turned off, when I switch on the machine to check my schedules, the orange charging light goes off! When I switch the machine off, the charging light goes on again.

By that, am I hurting my PPC or its battery?

If that hurts, then I cannot bring alone a usb cable when I'm on business trip?

What is your suggestions?

You are not 'hurting' anything us such - all that is happening is that the USB post is not providing enough power to power the ipaq when it is switched on.

It would be best if you unplugged the PPC before switching on as then this would just be like using it normally. Then when finished plug in to cable again.

Be aware that once the battery gets below a certain level the USB connection may not be able to charge it anyway (it is something like 30% - possibly something that you may want to test before you go on the road).

Hello, rob1303 & pshing.

The USB charging issue seems to affect different people in equally different ways - or maybe there are simply too many confounders present (different third - party USB cables, etc.). I don't know if software can influence USB charging as well.

I haven't unpacked my iPAQ cradle ever since I bought it, and have used the mains charger only three times.

All of my charging goes through some no - name USB sync cable; I usually wait for the battery (stock) to discharge to as low as 3% capacity, and it works fine (not quite sure about the 30% cut - off). I know this is somewhat stupid, having a Lithium ion battery and all - but old habits are hard to break.

It's possible that USB charging is affected by the motherboard model. I'm fairly certain that there are some ASUS motherboards which fail to deliver enough power to the USB ports, which results in fatal Northbridge (or was it Southbridge) burns.

The only odd thing I've noticed with my unit is that "Use USB Charging" never seems to go off despite deselecting the option - which makes a full discharge difficult at times I'm still trying out lots of new programs, and connecting to the USB is inevitable; as a result charging is inevitable as well (I could try Bluetooth ActiveSync, though - but it seems to be SLOW; the dongle's behind this thick steel case, bad reception when sitting in front of the PC).

Hi pshing. My iPAQ functions as you describe and I've had no problems. I use a USB charging/sync cable from Boxwave all the time with no issue.

I also had a problem with charging the 4700 in the car. I had a standard USB loading cable (which I ordered at the same time as the 4700) and a standard cigaretloader. I found out that that loader did not give enough power to load the 4700. It was flashing though but it could not keep up with the powerdrain from using bluetooth and the SD card in it. So I tried the cigaretloader from my Adapt bluetooth GPS mouse, just for fun, it it WORKS NOW!!! It loads good. When I see the battery-icon blinking in TomTom, I connect the USB cable and no problems anymore, the battery is not draining it is loading! Now I use the standard cigaretloader for my bluetooth gps mouse, and that works good too! Just a tip.

Bye,

Antwans.

ps: first post!
