New 4700 broke already
Well, I just got my HX4700 last tuesday and it is an awesome machine. However, now the speaker is dead and does not work. Headphones work great, but no sounds come out of the speaker itself on the iPaq. I tried a soft reset and a hard reset. I got off the phone with HP and they said that I will have to RMA it and that could take 7-14 business days after it is sent out . I cannot take it back to the place I got it because they special ordered this unit in for me and they do not carry them in stock. I am extremely upset that an expensive piece of hardware like this lasted only one week before it malfunctioned. I am starting to have my doubts about this purchase as reliability is #1 with me.

If it is anything like what has happened in the past... there is a switch at the bottom of the earphone jack that is not flipping back. Try inserting the headphone jack back in... and out a few times... and see if it might trip it.

Your problem could just be a sticky switch...

I had this exact problem with...how interesting...an old Gameboy. Somehow, a pencil got stuck in the headphone jack and it was holding the switch back. Luckily it wasn't far enough in to stop sound, but a little pressure would stop the speaker. I bet that is what the problem is. Why would a speaker stop working? Besides, it isn't that great of a loss, but I understand that it should work, considering how much this device costs.

I have to disagree with you their Ben that it's a great loss. I use my speaker daily either to listen recorded lessons or when i play a game and want to hear the sound. But everyone has their own preferences.

Had the exact same problem, took it back to the store and got a replacement. I have 2 pairs of earphones, a sony fontopia pair that fit snug in the socket and B & O pair that are a very tight fit. I think they may have been the problem.

Thanks for the advice, but that is not it. The unit was working fine this morning and just stopped right out of the blue when I went to switch to real VGA mode when going on the internet. After that, the speaker was just not working anymore. I haven't used my headphones in about three days

I had mine delivered to me last Monday from Comet's website. Had to phone them up today because my iPAQ has a "dropped pixel". It shows up bright green on a black background. It's so very annoying. Lucky it happened today, because Comet would not replace the product if I didn't report the fault within 7 days of it being delievered to me. They would've told me to go to HP to get it sorted. That would have been a problem, because my Bluetooth TomTom Software's registration key is locked to this iPAQ. So Comet offered to replace both items. How nice of them!

Yea, I agree.

I also like audible feedback when working in other apps as well.

I want everything working!

Well, I contacted Canada Computers today and they got a new 4700 on order and should be here by the end of the week . I am really worried about the durability of this unit but I love it over my 2210

I agree! I am so sick of people telling me that loosing a speaker is a non-issue. Yeah, silent movies, silent games, no GPS audiable "Right Turn Ahead", loss of my travel alarm clock, can't play songs at the hotel without being stuck to the device, no playback for voice recorder, no notification for appointments, and no sound to let me know the battery is dying. Sure, that's nothing, who needs it!

As far as I'm concerned, audio output accounts for 50% of the device's ability to output to me.

Have you looked on the HP web site for the audio update that prevents speaker damage? Not sure if new units would have this applied. May not help your existing unit but when you get the new one you should check.
