Get a 4700 or wait?
Hi, I currently have an ipaq 3875 which is starting to fail. I was thinking about getting an 4700 but a little worried about the VGA response and graphics.

I use my 3875 for divx and office stuff, does the 4700 represent a big enough step in progress or should I wait until they sort some of the screen issues out?

Is the new processor much faster that my old 3875?

Cheers,

Rich.

I do not now about the VGA stuff, but the processor speed is ~ 640 Mhz whereas your current IPAq is most likely 400 MHz

rich_uni,

Welcome to this superb website and forum.

I think 4700 is definitely a very good device.

The only thing it currently let me down is the 64MB of the RAM. I think I will upgrade the RAM to 128MB after 1 year so to make this device perfect for myself.

But apart from this only complaint, I am quite happy with it.

The new processor is 624MHz, proven very fast in loading any applications.

The dual expansion slot has enabled the device to be expanded into more functionality.

Good luck to your selection.

Thanks for the welcome! I read the PC Pro review now and they are impressed with it.

I read somewhere that the graphics performed at about a third speed of the previous incarnations. Although I'm not sure about that. Anyone got any comparisons?

As for the processor speed, from what I recall from my uni course hz aren't a good indicator of "real" processing speed.

For example a risc Arm chip my perform an operation in 1 cycle while an intel chip may require 3 so each intel chip needs to be three times faster (in hz). I may be way off, but that's what I though? You just can't compare chips from two companies so easy.

Finally will all my software from my 3800 work on the 4700?

I think I'll make my mind up today.

Cheers,

Rich.

As you are comparing an ARM chip with an ARM chip then comparisons are valid.

As for your software - it should work - but do a search first to see if there are landscape or known VGA issues with it.

Hi Rich,
I was wondering why your 3875 is starting to fail? What exactly is wrong? And what do you mean with "screen issues"?

Hey Hey
I have a hx4700 =) It seems to be working ok, fast and all....
If you are talking baout VGA response and graphics, I would say it is ok but I think i have read that the X50V has 16meg graphics which I dont think the hx4700 has
but It is a preety good buy, like watching movies on it is all good!
I'm not sure if u should wait or not.... but you can never wait forever :P:P or u'll never get one :P!
hehe

My 3895 keeps discharging. I don't dock it at work by the end of the day it's dead as a doo doo - battery probably wants changing. This looses all my contacts even though I stored them in the non-volatile memory. Which is strange.

A few times I left it charging to find the same thing in the morning completely dead. After some "jiggling" about with the dock cables and a few atempts to keep re-attaching the ipaq it comes back to life.

The screen issue I refer to was mentioned of the review of the 4700 in issue 123 (Jan 2005) of PC Pro (a British publication):- " there's some minor stuttering when switching between applications, but this is due to the larger screen having to be refreshed". Is this refreshing a noticable problem?

Oh I've found a company called superetrader (http://www.superetrader.co.uk/produc...roducts_id=155)
which have it for £365(inc vat). Is this a good price, as I can't find it any cheaper?

Cheers,

Rich

Stuttering?
No I never noticed anything. The screen is the most beautiful thing I ever saw.
The price seems ok for me.

Hey KyoKyo

I saw this wonderful HP bluetooth headphone set on your photo. Are you happy with it? Good quality? Easy to install?

Now, I'm starting to panic about grey imports in the UK. It seems that grey import Malaysian models are being sent out by this firm and may others.

Apparently the wi-fi is a different spec on these greys'. Plus the warranty is reduced to 12 months..... grrr.

Anyone had an experience?

Rich.

Rich,

I bought my 4700 from superetrader.

On the day I bought it, I enabled my wireless on the Pocket PC to comm to my wireless ADSL router, it worked straightaway.

The vendor (superetrader) delivered the unit within 24 hours after I raised the purchase order. My experience with them is excellent.

Don't know about other users, but I'm so far satisfied with my purchase via them.

Alternatively, expansys.com is always my one-stop shop to look for Pocket PC and accessories. Worth checking out with.

Good luck.

Rich,

Sorry, forgot to mention one thing though.

In terms of the software, chances are, the softwares you have used on the 38xx (pocket pc 2002) is not working with 4700 (Pocket PC 2003 Second Edition), unless you download the latest version from the manufacturers' website.

Some vendors have been proactively releasing new update for the latest OS, some are not.

So it's worthwhile checking whether the latest version of your software are compatible with PPC2003SE.

Good luck again.
