Memory Questions: effect on RAM
I’ve had my 4700 for about a week and I am so happy with it. I used to be a devout Palm OS user and now I’m a convert. Thank you all for letting me see the light.

Ok, now I have a question about the memory, particularly the RAM. I have noticed that after using my 4700 for awhile, the percentage of my RAM memory slowly goes down. It’s slow enough that I really didn’t notice it until this morning. This morning my memory was at 46% availability. This was after checking to make sure that no other applications were running under “Running Programs”.

I did a backup onto my SD card this afternoon and it prompted me to do a soft reboot. After the soft reboot, I saw that my memory had jumped to 62% availability.

So my question is: “What is causing my RAM memory to slowly get filled up even when it says that there are no other applications running?”

This seems to be a temporary thing because the memory frees up after doing a soft reboot. I install games, applications, notes, etc onto my SD card and I know that PIE stores page history in memory unless you change “Save links to pages visited” to 0 days. Are there any other “memory draining” applications?

I have Spb Pocket Plus, so when I close applications, I’m assuming the application closes for good. Can someone help me to better understand how memory is managed by the PPC?

I would hazard a guess that, even though the applications are actually being closed, there's a possibility that they may still be leaving "parts" of themselves in RAM, such as temporary files or working data (just the same as full-sized Windows programs tend to). It's a bit of an annoyance, but nothing that an occasional soft-reset won't fix. Just like its big brother, Windows Mobile isn't perfect at memory management...but then, what OS is? (BTW, that was a rhetorical question.)

It is caused by most softwares in the market are not SE compliant. The only way to have the memory released back is soft reset and waiting for the developers to have their software SE compliant.

So, then, for a Newbie like me, should I soft reset after every program shutdown?

After every program shutdown? No. If you have to do that, you have a program with a bad memory leak. Once a day? Probably not a bad idea. I take advantage of the backup software which has an option to reset. That way I don't have to remember to do it and I don't even notice it

I always soft reset my device after I take it out of the cradle (just a habit that I have gotten used to).
