URGENT!!!! "BT modem connect" continuous loop!
While trying unsuccessfully to access the internet through my laptop via a BT dongle, I have somehow changed settings so that the iPAQ is continuously trying to dial/connect via BT null modem and will not stop. If I click on "dismiss" in the bubble it returns. If I click on settings in the bubble, there are no settings showing to change. I cannot use my device at all, the connection message constantly pops up, preventing me from seeing the screen or being able to access anything. I have tried umpteen soft resets and have removed the battery - twice - for about 30 seconds each time with no success. I've deleted any BT connections, but it is still trying to connect.

Is there anything else I can do to resolve this? I'm fearing a hard reset and I am currently on the road (and now cannot access contacts or appointments)!

Please help!!!!!

Have you tried leaving the message to see if it fails to connect on its own? - it sounds to me (and this is a guess) that you have AS set to sync continously rather than manually and so it keeps trying to connect.

Pehaps I wasn't as clear as I should have been. I have not/do not use AS anywhere other than in its cradle on my desktop. I'm refering to a problem using a BT dongle on my laptop trying to access the internet. Now, the BT null modem is trying to "connect" continuously. Even if I leave the message box/bubble alone, it will not go away. If I tap on "dismiss" it immediately returns. It is keeping me from accessing anything on the device, since it blocks the display. A catch-22 for trying to troubleshoot. :-( I do not see any solution other than a hard reset.

Do you have your laptop and bluetooth dongle with you? Just wondering if it is possible to let it make the connection that it is trying to make

(Otherwise I think you may be correct - hard reset is the only way out ).

Yes -- it's the laptop and BT that has caused the problem! Nothing has solved this, so far.

The only backup I have is the (daily) iPAQ backup file. I'm rather reluctant to try a full restore from this while on the road. What a dilemma!

I'm missing the ease of the Palm OS about now...

Sorry I must be missing something - can you let me know the current position:

1) You have your laptop with you, it is on (with the BT dongle in it) your iPaq tries to connects - all the time - but fails and just keeps trying

2) You have your laptop and BT dongle with you - but they are NOT on - and your iPaq tries to connects - all the time - but fails and just keeps trying

3) You don't have your laptop with your - and your iPaq tries to connects - all the time - but fails and just keeps trying

Which one?

Number 2. Laptop and BT have been off, but the iPAQ is still in its continous loop, attempting to connect to a BT null modem. :-(

Weirdest thing I've seen...

Can you switch them on - allow the connection to be made (as that should work) and then we can work out what is going on with the settings.

Yes, I now have the BT enabled, and the only two entries in My Bluetooth Places for iPAQ are iPAQ Network Access and iPAQ File Transfer. I think the problem lies with the settings in the iPAQ, but I cannot figure out how to get to any of the settings pages with the message bubble appearing constantly -- it's nearly impossible to navigate, even if I'm fast.

Rob, it's getting rather late in my current time zone, so I think I will start fresh in the morning and continue the troubleshooting. I certainly do appreciate your help! Hopefully I can figure this out so that no one else experiences the the same headache.

Thank you Rob! Unfortunately I have not resolved the problem and I am about to board a flight. I may be stuck until I return home next week. :-(

Well looks like some program is continously trying to access the internet. My guess is a today plug-in, a weather one perhaps?

I would let the device connect to your laptop, so the message stops, then temporarily disable all today plug-ins. After you do that, hopefully the messages will stop, giving you time to go into network connections, then select networks, then where it says "programs that auto connect to internet should use"...change it from BVRP ConnMgr to My ISP. When you do that, the PDA will stop thinking its ok to force a BT connection everytime an internet request is received.
