ARRGG!!!...My internal speaker stopped working
I've had my hx4705 for over a month now. I've been extra careful with it and never dropped it. On Christmas day I was going up to the mountains with the family. I had my baby mounted to the window while me and my sister were watching an episode of The Simpsons. I didn't have my FM broadcaster so we were using the internal speakers. About half-way through the sound suddenly stopped. I have soft reset it countless times, but no sound. When I plug in the headphones, no problem.

I remember reading about a month ago someone else experiencing the same problem. People were saying that it could have something to do with a switch inside the phone jack that might have gotten stuck, but I hadn't used earphones in a while with it and it was working and then just stopped.

I called HP and they wanted me to do a HArd REset, which i haven't had a chance to do yet. If that doesn't work they want me to send the unit back to them. WTF. I am so bummed

Do a full back-up and then try the Hard reset.

Also try putting in a headphone jack and removing a couple of times whilst playing music or a movie and see if the sound comes back (if so then it is a hardware fault and I would return the unit).

thanks Rob. I already tried jiggling the headphone jack in the unit while playing sound. Nothing, I am just about to backup and hard reset now. But I have a feeling that it won't help and that it is a hardware problem. I f***n hate HP

The speaker drops out on me typically after prolonged headphone use. I just soft reset the PPC and it works again...until the next time.

I paid over $600 for this thing. The best PPC I've ever owned, but also the only one that ever broke on me too. What gives. For that much money everything should work and stay working.

I agree...but hey, if it wasn't a decent PPC why did we buy them?

Well if its any consolation, HP does have the best customer service. They will mail you a box and have a new/fixed PDA back to your house within 3-4 days, maybe 6-7 because of holidays.

I am F'ING livid.
Okay. Guess why I'm posting here. That's right! The internal speaker of my 4700 just decided it would like to no longer function. HOORAY! I better be getting a new one from HP for this. Or I'll have to slap somebody.

I don't suppose anyone has found a solution for this, since the last post in December, other than sending off to HP?

Thanks, all!

Do the headphones work? If they do, then here's what happened- you stuck the stylus in the headphone jack instead of the stylus jack. It is easy to do as they are right one on top of each other. When this happens, the stylus breaks the switch (every time) in the headphone jack and it no longer works thinking that headphones are plugged in. The bottom line is that you can no longer listen to the external speakers but only with headphones. Every other ipaq model has the stylus jack on the opposite side of the headphone jack, but on the 4700, the headphone jack and stylus jack are together and it is very easy to put the stylus in the wrong hole by mistake.

So what are you telling me, ultimately? If I send my iPAQ in, they're going to tell me I'm screwed, or repair/replace it? That's great if that's what caused it, now I know to be more cautious about that for the future. But my main concern is getting it fixed. Are they going to tell me "tough," and send it back? Should I just crack the case, now, and fix it myself?

Bleleeeehehhhh

Nah, send it back, and just say "I dunno, it just stopped working???". Thats what I did! Even now though, I am really cautious about putting that stylus in the hole because I am always in a hurry and I know that I am going to screw up and put it in the wrong hole again .

I had the same problem, I had my headphones in the PDA and when I took them out the internal speaker wouldn't work. I just put the headphones back in and out again and it worked fine.

Maybe a dummy plug would be in order...
I'm going to go ahead and get it warrantied, whatever happens happens, I guess... I'll just play dumb in the hopes it'll be replaced/repaired.

But for the future, I think I'll take an ooold mini-stereo plug off some headphones and zip if off, and stick it into the headphone jack. Or something that'll plug that headphone jack... Of course I'd prefer if it was null, so it didn't actually deactivate the onboard speaker when it was plugged in to protect the headphone jack...

When I go to do that, I think I'll bust out my Dremel and buzz off those 3 little bumps found on each of the battery release sliders. I think that would be the PERFECT solution to all the times they've switched my iPAQ crazy in my pocket. I never have any call to change the battery, so I don't see how it'd really be a bother. Even without those 6 total little bumps, I could still work the sliders with a little more precision tool. ::

Back to the drawing board!
