is 470x bulky for everyday use
I've played with one at local compusa store and found 4705 to be a stunning ppc. However, I'm little worried about the size. Did any of you find 4705 to be too big in everyday use?

Also does any of you have the thumb keyboard

What are your impression? Is it worth it?

Thanks

I think the iPaq is great and not too big at all. Each person needs to decide for himself, though, because others say that it is too large. I don't mind the size and it seems to be just right for me.

Welcome to the site.

It is a tad bit bigger than the other PDA's on the market, but it is in my humble opinion the best PDA on the market hands down. As for overall size, it substitutes for my laptop so I'm willing to put up with the extra inch.

Good luck!

I was worried about the same thing, but I found that the size was no problem at all. I have mine fitted with a Sena case and I carry it in my shirt pocket without any problem.

Its all about what you want to do with your handheld and what pros N cons you are looking for. The bigger handhelds tend to have more options and better ones as well, however, they are also bigger, bulkier and sometimes have more problems when it comes to certain aspects.

Take for instance the VGA screens. The pros is a screen that looks 10 times better than the rest. However, it also has some compatability issues with certain programs. [also there are newer programs which have positive reviews, that are VGA only programs...] Something to think about as well...

Also size and memory. If all you are planning to do is hold addresses and buisness contacts/phone numbers, you could probably do just fine with something along the lines of the HP iPAQ hx2400 Pocket PC, or the Axim X50 520MHz would probably be perfect-

I would go to the websites for these handhelds and use the "compare all handhelds" options to see whats what. Then when you think you have your top 2-3 PDA choices, come back and ask any specific questions you have and hopefully others can help guide you to the right one. And dont get frustrated or get upset if someone really gets into it. The community will usually give you a tone more help, then any tech support or service support will. Hope this helped...

I traded up from a 2215 and was very concerned about the form factor of the 4700. I've had it now for two weeks and I'm really pleased with this IPAQ. I think the VGA screen and processer is top grade. Get a 4700 and you'll be happy.

The thumboard is very nice but I really don't use it much since I got a case for my 4705. It is bigger than most PDA's, if you want something for pocketable check out the Dell X50v.

Where did you get the xlarge battery? Is it the same size as the original or does it extend out?

I use mine everyday. It isn't much bigger than a 3955 and is smaller when you consider I don't have to use expansion sleeves any longer. Plus if you want a bigger screen and SD and CF and BT and WIFI, you have to put it somewhere. It's bigger than a 4150 but it has more stuff.

Size and bulkiness
I passed from a 1900 to 4700 and was a little bit woried about the size and the weight but the extarordinarily clear screen does not really cost any real bulkiness since this unit is rather thin. I can really put it in my shirt pocket without having at all the sensation tearing it ;-) Notice that I have not received yet my Innopocket Aluminium case. I hope that the case will not increase too much the bulkiness.... 4700 is a little bit higher and larger that my 1900 but the screen and battery life are largely worth of it (I would not like to go back to my 1900). So I am very happy with it. But the exact evalution of the bulkiness depends of course on your way of using the unit...
Regards,
Murat

IMHO, the hx4700 series is a good size. I honestly wish mine was just a hair bigger, but I'm a bloody giant to begin with, so everything is too small for me.

I did find that adding a metal case to it made it a little bulkier, but honestly, it's not enough to bother me. It's better protected, and it added enough bulk where I'm more comfortable with it than I was before.

Thanks for replies. I've pretty much settled on hx ppc. This unit stands out among the competition. The build and screen quality, and battery life is what really sold me on it. Since it is rather large I was eager to hear what everyone else thought of their units after some use. After replies, I'm convinced hx should fit my needs nicely.

I got my 4705 a couple of weeks ago and I am really happy with it I haven't put it down yet. I also have an HP Ipaq 6315 phone, it was given to me as a Xmas gift and this unit is pretty awesome and smaller than the 4705, I find that I rather have the larger screen, and a more powerful cpu, the extra size is not an issue for me although I have to carry both at time since the 6315 is my phone what a problem eh?.

Cheers

Anybody that says a 4700 fits "just fine" into a shirt pocket must either: a) have very big pockets or b) doesn't mind having a bulge in all the wrong places.

I use my pda everyday and take it to and from work without the need for a bag or anthing else to carry it. I stopped carrying a bag to work since my company started x-raying all bags coming into the building (not that I'm afraid of the x-rays but just the annoying line to wait just to get into work in the morning).

A co-worker of mine has a 4700 which I must say is quite thin but there's no way I'd want that thing in my pocket during the course of an 8 hour work day! Plus, I feel that the smaller (and lighter) a PDA is, the more apt you will be to take it to places that you wouldn't normally want to be seen with a big, rectangular object in your pocket - unless of course, it's your wallet.

Of course, if you absolutely need the functionality of exactly what the 4700 offers then so be it, however, there are just as capable devices out there with smaller form factors.
