How long can I keep my PDA on?
While here at work I often reference the 4700.
It would be nice to keep the unit on (i.e. plugged in) all the time, this would allow quick access to a pharmacokinetics program often used and a collection of pocket word documents on the strange/ill often used drugs in our setting.
Do any of you see any harm in continuous AC connection?

I see no difference from a PC to a PPC, I leave my PC on all day. Maybe someone can comment on any adverse effects on the battery. I've noticed mine gets very warm sitting in the cradle for prolonged periods of time. Make sure you're running a screensaver or Dockware to save the screen.

I have my 4700 turned on (plugged in) 12 hours a day. Without any problems. I mean, if you don't use the pda for your everyday's work or management or organization, what for then ?

LCD screens do not need a screen saver, because nothing in the screens is burned. A cathode ray tube (CRT) monitor needs a screen saver because there is a phosphoric layer in which the elektron ray can burn in patterns. This is not the case with LCD. So it doesn't matter if you have a screen saver or not.

Actually, as most anyone who's worked on cash registers or other LCD screens that stay on one particular screen all the time and are on the entire working day can tell you, LCD's DO in fact get burn in, it's just different than CRT's. Different in that, if you put a solid black screen as your screensaver for a few days, and then a solid white screen as a screensaver the next few days, you can almost always eliminate any burn in on an LCD screen. Too bad some of the POS (Point Of Sale) units ive seen with LCD screens dont allow this =\

I think the thing to worry about with an LCD screen would be the backlight, I've had backlights die on laptops before, and seen them die on POS units, so I set my iPAQ to turn off the backlight after xx minutes, both plugged in and on batteries.

I leave mine on all day - I wouldn't worry about it. Iw won't damage the battery and I know people who have had there's for 3 years and have done this with no ill effects.

The effects you are telling, do appear maybe after 5-10 years of heavy usage. I think by then I will have an iPAQ implanted in my arm and no longer the 4700 unit.
