4700 pocket Informant help
Hi, I have the new Pocket Informant 5.6.1 installed on my 2210. It has a lot better and more features that are on my 4700. I want to uninstall Pocket Informant on my 4700 and install the 5.6.1 version, but HOW??? It is not listed in my remove programs, nor can I find it in file explorer, nor is there an uninstall button. I want to install the 5.6.1 version on my SD card but it in order to do that I have to uninstall the version that came with my 4700, but how do I do that??

**Oh, and by the way, the full version that is on the 4700 is a cr@p version! it is version 5.0.4.5

You can't - it is built into ROM - if you want to upodate to the latest version you HAVE to install it into Main Memory as it will then overwrite the file references to those built in (which will still be there - but the programme will use the new files).

I disagree on you comment about the built in version though - programmes always get updated with new features - but 5.0.x is still a PIM which is excellent in comparison to the default PO.

Second that, the 5.0.x has great flexibilty and features. I looked into the upgrade for $10 or whatever they were offering 4700 owners. Truly didn't see enough value in the upgrade to spend the $$$.

Yeah, but if I install it into main memory, then it will be a major burden on my RAM. The reason that I want the 5.6.1 is that it officially supports Real VGA mode and it has more features such as the ability to have text in your calendar instead of those stupid bars which are pointless. I use PI regularly on my 2210, but I never use it on my 4700 because of this lack. I like to look at the calendar and view my appointments all at once instead of those stupid bars that do not tell you anything

***UPDATE***You cannot install another version of Pocket Informant by installing it in main memory. It overwrites the older original version and replaces itself with a version that does not operate.
When trying to open it , you get an error message saying " 'PocketInformant' is not a valid Pocket PC application". I have since uninstalled it and the older version of PI does not come back, so I think that the only way to get this back is to do a hard reset . good thing that I made a backup

Sorry, that's just not true. I am running 5.6.1.0178 right now. If you are having the problem you specified you need to submit it to WebIS support http://www.pocketinformant.com/support_request.php or visit the WebIS forums. There is mention that sometimes (not all the time) their automatic install program fails for some reason. This thread goes into how to resolve it. http://www.pocketinformant.com/Forum...wtopic=6060&hl=

I answered this for you last week - the mini-type IS available in your version - read THIS thread again (especially post #2).

Ooops sorry Rob I stand corrected. I have it now figured out. I missed your reply to that thread (I wish that I would get emails to answers for subscribed threads). Thanks again

Hey rob1303, I have question for you.

I'm currently running PI (and with no speed issues) from my SD card, but I originally had the app in ram, then fs before finally re-installing it to the sd.

My question is: is installing it to ram a prerequisite before being able to inst. to the card or should one be able to inst. to the card without first installing to ram and have the updated version still function over the rom version?

Thanks.

I am surprised that it is working - just on what I have read on the PocketInformant site - where they state that any upgrade to a 47xx version of PI MUST be installed in RAM to work.

But thinking about it logically I suppose that the following could happen
- installing the update to RAM - this would "copy over" the built in files
- uninstalling PI - would delete the references to them in the File Allocation Table
- installing to SD - would add markers in the FAT to tell it to look at the SD card.

So it may be that by installing to RAM first, you can then install and run the programme from SD card (you won't gain anything in RAM doing this, but you will lose less on installing the updated version).

As I said I don't know - but if someone else with a 47xx wants to try it (and keep a track on memory used then I think everyone who has a 47xx would be very interested).

I might try it out this coming weekend. Too much at work this week should I have to do hard reset or spend a lot of time getting it back to the way it is now (stable).

Thanks for your response rob1303.

When I have time I'll do the same thing.

Thanks to you other guys for checking into this as well.

I think I'll post this question in a separate thread as well.
