Battery Life - Watching Movies
Just got my new 4705 and just joined this Forum, now my first question!

Used pocketdixencoder version 3.50 to encode a 144 min (2.4 hour) and played it on Beta Payer. All work great, especially the 4705.

The question is the battery life. At about the 2 hour market the 4705 battery gives out. Wifi / BT and all other programs are off. Screen set about 50%. Movie sits on a 4G CF card and there is also a 1G SD card installed.

Any thoughts about increasing the battery life? Am I missing something or is this normal?

What kind of life are the rest of you seeing? For this test I did it at home last night so I could monitor all. I started from 100% and other than checking the battery about 1 hour in did nothing else.

As for replacement battery, is it better to buy one extended for about $ 120 or two normal ones at about 60? Price seems about the same for either option.

Thanks!

Hmmm, i own a 3115 myself,but i have an idea...

Try going to: Settings>system>power>standby, and adjust to something shorter then i think default 72 hours of stand by power that it reserves for battery life to preserve your main data.
Say like 24-36.

And retry dude.

Mine is at min 24 hr.

I can watch 2 movies and read avantgo no sweat and have a fair bit left,mind you,i charge mine daily.

Tell us more about your movie: dimensions, framerate. Did you use internal speaker or headphones, the sound volume...

Two Movies?
55% after T3?

Now I'm really annoyed and really need your help because I have a 4 hour flight next week. Yes, I too recharge everyday. This is my 2nd. PPC. Old one was 3975 so I am not a total Newbie but obviously in this case I am a baby!

Here are more details

Movie = Man on Fire with Denzel Washington
2 hours and 26 minutes long
338 MB
DivX 5.0
320 x 253
Bitrate = 253 kbs
FPS = 29.97
Sound = 64 KBS Stereo FS = 48,000 Hz.

The test was performed at home. 4705 was full changed.
Sound was a medium with headphones plugged in.
Standby Period set to 36 hours
All other programs other than BetaPlayer are off including WiFi, BT, etc.
Screen set to 50%

The batteries I saw on the HP site. $ 69.99 and 129.99. Standard = 1800 mAh and Extended = 3600 mAh. That why I was asking if buying two Standards is better than one Extended.

But my main issue is getting to see 2 movies on one charge as others have done.

Thanks!

that 4 gb cf card is not a microdrive is it? If it is and you have the movie stored on that card turn on the microdrive setting in betaplayer so it won't keep cycling and drain your battery

By microdrive I guess you mean the little hard drive? No, its a reg. Compact Flash Card. Is there a setting for CF cards?

Actually this was not intended to be a test.

Just an observation when i plugged in the power after completing the movie.

The T3 was in its original VCD format, just copied into my 1GB standard cf card.

I prefer it this way to save time resampling the movies.

VCD format is 352x288 at 25f/s and data bitrate of 1140kbps. The movie was played on betaplayer fit to screen at 50% brightness and stereo earplugs

I hope this information helps

I've never had luck with that setting. Every time I turn it on, Betaplayer begins to stutter the playback (lots of pauses). I just use the regular setting, and I've never noticed a particulary excessive battery drain. Oh, I've got a Hitachi 4GB microdrive

What size have you made the cache - and how much main memeory do you have free? if you make the cache larger than the available main memory then I would expect problems - otherwise it should work fine.

I had the cache set at 16000, so I changed it to 8000 and that seems to have made a big difference. I've got an extended battery, so battery life really wasn't an issue for me anyway. Thanks.

Finally my SD card arrived and I was able to test battery capacity myself.

I used a full 700mb Xvid movie encoded at 808kbps, sound encoded at 135kbps for the test. Total play time about 1 hour 46 minutes.
Screen brightness was 60% and volume was set to max. I played the movie with Betaplayer (of course).

After the movie was finished I had 54% battery left, very good considering I can go a lot lower on sound and brightness

On a side note I noticed that the 4700 was getting pretty hot, so I put a thermometer under it to check; when the movie was finished it was 35.9 degrees!
