SE_VGA versus OzVGA for HX4705 ??
I have been using SE_VGA for awhile now and it seems great except for Pocket Informant which the developer said they will not support it since microsoft doesn't support SE_VGA. The SE_VGA makes the text on the today screen sometimes too small (like on HP's battery and memory indication panel).

Has anybody found another true VGA hack program to use on these great HX4705 devices. I haven't tried OzVGA and was wandering if there are any others that people may recommend.

thanks

I used SE_VGA for a long while but switched to OzVGA as it had more options including font sizing. I also recommend Tweaks2K2 for many reasons including options to maximize your real VGA experience.

Pocket Informant has an options page where you can specify display fonts and their sizes. It is not perfect but good enough that I only run in real VGA with no eye strain. I frankly cannot imagine going back to the original "out of the box" VGA display.

yeah, I would feel the same way if all my apps would work in 'real' VGA mode

I also started with SE_VGA and switched to OzVGA for the better text sizing options. Also, my today theme appears more normal using Oz than SE.

When using SE_VGA or OzVGA are the icons in Pocket Informant chopped off? It looks like I am seeing only like the left upper corner of the icons in the application. Am I missing something? I am using OzVGA now.

I dont think the issue here is which one is better than the other one. They both work fine while one (Oz) having more options with a bit more complicated interface.

I have tried Oz first and started using SE later. Obviously the OS and the programs are not ready for this "real vga" thing. Yes Tweaks2k is good for forcing the apps to work with VGA but to much work and not much outcome...IMO.

I say just use whichever you feel most comfortable with.

Please help
I am lost what does SE_VGA and OzVGA do? I downloaded OzVGA and it made the writing on my screen smaller and allowed me to turn my screen upside down, but now only half of my fitaly keyboard shows. If anyone out there could please explain all this hack software to me it would be greatly appreciated.

They both do the same thing, albeit ozVGA is more flexible, namely they allow you to use the device in 'real' VGA mode (some call it RVGA mode). The 4700 has a true 480 x 640 resolution screen but this is normally used to provide a much better quality image than that of a standard QVGA (Quarter VGA) 240 x 320 resolution device rather than to allow more information on the screen. When in RVGA the device effectively has four times the screen area available to display information and the QVGA emulation layer is bypassed (the emulation layer is used to allow old style QVGA applications to run unmodified on VGA devices and quadruples the size of all pixels so the application fills the 480 x 640 screen area); not all programs run correctly in RVGA mode.

Some people (myself included) only use RVGA mode to browse the web because with the smallest font setting the text is still readable and you can see a comparable amount of information to a 1024 x 768 desktop screen. Other people run in RVGA all the time and think it's great.

HTH.

[Before I download and install SE_VGA, could someone answer the following for me?

1) Does SE_VGA run all the time or do I have to start it each time I want to use it?
2) Can I turn it off and run in, “Out of the box mode” when I want to?
3) Does it have to be installed in main memory or can I put it in the ipaq file store?
4) I envisage that I will only use it for Internet explorer and possibly Memory Map. So to use SE_VGA, will it be a case of, Turn on PDA, turn on Wifi, Start Se_VGA, Start IE?

Thanks

Tom

I can only answer for ozVGA but I'm fairly sure the answers are the same for SE_VGA:

1) The device will stay in whichever mode you set it to
2) Yes, you can switch between standard VGA and RVGA (see 1)
3) The DLLs (the bulk of the footprint) have to be installed in main memory but the switching utility can be installed on the filestore
4) Not quite; switching mode requires a soft reset with all current RVGA utilities so you would need to switch mode / soft reset and go from there

You can actually install almost all the DLLs to the IPAQ File Store. Here's how (all the usual disclaimers about registry editing apply!):

1. Go to "HKLM\Loader\SystemPath" in your favorite registry editor and add the path "\iPAQ File Store\OzVGA\" to the MultiSZ key on a new line. Note that you MUST include the trailing backslash.
2. Move all the DLLs from \Windows\ to \iPAQ File Store\OzVGA\ except tshrs.96.dll (this one MUST be in \Windows\, but it's only 16KB.

Note that you should ABSOLUTELY backup your system before attempting this! If you do something wrong your PocketPC WILL NOT WORK.

Thanks, although I stand by my original statement. While it may be possible to relocate the system files to the filestore I'd contend that this is the last thing you want to be doing as it will slaughter the performance.

I haven't found performance to be significantly degraded installing to the iPAQ File Store. If you do see a slowdown, you might as well get used to it. WM2005 will run entirely out of ROM (no more "storage memory") according to the rumors.

Thanks, that's interesting, but I can't comment on the next release of Windows Mobile!
