lockups on hx4705
I experience frequent lockups on my hx4705. These lockups occur during regular use, soft reboots, and hard reboots. It can occur at any time with no specific consistency on when it will occur. It usually takes about five to more than a dozen attempts at a hard reboot to eventually get it to cycle all the way through the intial setup process. Is there something that I'm doing wrong or may this be a defective device? Any others with similar problems...I'm interested in solutions.

tadhoo,

Welcome to this superb website and forum.

It happened to me many times (20 times at least) after I first received it. I hard resetted the device 5 times in a week.

Then I carefully fine tune the software I have been installing, now I don't experience often now.

Obviously we are not the only to be blamed, I believe some of the software vendors are not taking advantage of SE to proactively upgrading their software to fit the MS software. Definitely HP is the last to be blamed, to my opinion, as even if you complain to them, chances are they are NOT going to do anything about it.

Good luck and hope someone else can give you a more definitive answer on this.

Welcome to the site. Read this thread and try the test and apply the fix if necessary. http://www.ipaqhq.com/forums/showthr...9&page=7&pp=25

I had some issues very early on. My device failed this test, but ever since I applied the patch, I have no more issues. Don't know if it was truly the fix that did it or if I finally got everything configured just so.

I have had stability issues even after having installed this patch (thanks again CTitanic!). PocketHAck Master 2004 is a terrrible source of locks. So I stopped using it but the instability continued. I have now stopped using TodayPanel that comes installed in the ROM and my 4700 is much more stable. This is quite strange given that this applet comes with the iPAQ and should have been tested by HP...

This is underlined in other threads in these forums but 4700 seems quite fragile to the Today Applets you use. I only use now applets from SBSH since they are very stable on my iPAQ...

I would suggest to try to de-activate all Today plugins first, and re-activate them one at a time in order to check if one of them is not the source of your problems...

Regards,

Murat

Sorry to hear about your problems with Today Panel. It runs fine on mine. I couldn't do without the slider bar for the brightness control. The only Today Plug-ins I had probelms with were Journal Bar and other Omega One products. I do think they put out a newer version of Journal Bar not long after I quit using it, but I like you started using SBSH products. I only used Journal Bar for the weather so I switched to Pocket Weather.

Yes, I was a convinced BatteryPackPro user on my 1900 but it caused very severe problems on my new 4700. It was one of the first softs that I have had to uninstall (before a clean start with a hard reset)...

Something must be otherwise in conflict with Today Panel on my 4700 but I can live without it, and de-activating it seems to have solved my problems (at least during the last week....). My new configuration with just iLauncher and Pocket Breeze on the Today page is able not to block untill the next reset after the automatic nightly backup :-)

If anyone else is having conflicts with Today panel, we could maybe locate the source of the problem (all the softs I have installed on my 4700 appear in my MyPDA page....

Thanks for the suggestion for applying this patch. I ran the test and failed. I applied the patch, then was able to pass the test. Restarts (soft) were okay. I, then, installed a WiFi Graph utility and began noticing that my problems came back (application lock up, then problems with locking up during a hard reset). Once I'm able to get through the reset process, I'll remove the WiFi Graph and see if this helps. Also, I'll try to install other software and see if their is similar behavior. It would be a shame if I'm unable to install any software on this expensive device.

Hi tadhoo, if you take a look at my View MyPDA you will see that you should have no problem installing most applications on your device. Some may however not be up to WM2003SE and some games needing GAPI won't necessarily run correctly either. I don't know what WiFi utility you are trying to run, but i am able to use WiFifofum. You may want to see if that does what your looking for.

It doesn't seem to matter which application I install after the .NET patch. I seem to continue experiencing lock ups regardless of whether I've installed anyhting or am simply running the default settings after a hard reset. Perhaps this is just a defective device and my best bet is to return it to OfficeDepot for a replacement (good thing I purchased the extended warranty).

Sorry to hear of the continued problems. Unless anyone else has any suggestions, maybe a replacement might be your best option.

Splash ID caused a Hard Reset on mine, never installed it again and no problems since.

Thanks to everyone for your advice. I'll update the thread once I receive and test a replacement.

I have the same problem with my 4700
I have replaced the battery without improvement
there are always some unexpected shutdown and soft reboots.
I am still waiting to track the problem before turning the unit back to hp.

I would always try a hard reset and then start loading programmes (1 by 1) using your device and seeing which software causes the issue.

If it happening without loading third party software and without changing any of the setting (ie leaving ther machine in its 'out of the box' condition) then you need to retrun your device.
